Have to replace my stock 1.6 injected 16V with another due to blown head gasket.
Is it an easy job to do a straight swap? What's involved and is there anything to look out for or any certain way to do it? Does it come out the top or under the car?
Can it be done in a weekend by two reasonably cluey guys with a load of beer at their disposal?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

reuse your inlet manifold and piping and ignition system so you arent introducing a different model of electrics into the problems.

Mark EVERY plug and hose as to where it went, even if you mark both sides of the join A, B etc so you dont mix em up, once you unthread the engine loom out and it hanging over the guard its hard to remember whats what

get a big piece of cardboard and when you pull a group of bolts out, poke em into teh cardboard together and draw a circle around them and mark them, IE right engine mount, for things like manifolds where there is a lot of them, poke them in in order with an arrow indicating front so you dont have to figure out which hole the lonf bolt went in

Take lots of pics of things to go back to if you need to

1 mechanic can do it in under a day so the pair of you should be well and truly right in a weekend

Can be done in a day easily....
Have a camera near by and zip lock bags+ pen.everything has to go back exactly how it came out....obviously.

What I would do is every time something is undone...take pictures and put every bolt off that item in a zip lock bag and label.

Don't mix up wires and/or hose....these are the biggest head Fuck ever..

You are definitely best off doing your clutch and timing belt when your there. Don't take chances with timing belts. No matter what the last owner said.

Beer does help a great deal

Hire and engine crane as it comes out from the top

Thanks very much. I'm pretty sure the guy I bought it off knew and just put 20L of chemiweld in it the c@#t.
This Vit (which I love) is my daily that gets me up the beach and back. I'm more into my old Fords and Dodges that are obviously carburetted, so the whole injected, electronic, plethora of wiring is a bit foreign to me.

Yeah. Will do clutch and timing belt regardless. I've got an engine crane and access to a hoist but if it comes out the top, no need for the hoist.
Should I pull out the box and engine as one and then attach box to new engine and replace as one?

I would leave the box in and lower the engine onto it.
I'm pretty sure either way you would have to do it separately. As the box will only come out from the bottom.

The carby engine are Sooo much easier. Wiring does my head in. Take your time and observe and you'll be fine

Yeah, believe it or not, this is the first and only Injected car I've ever had.
It's also the newest being a 93.
The next newest car I've owned is a 66 Dodge haha. Mate suggest a CA18DET but I just want to do a straight swap.
Can get a replacement from BME for $1450 with around 70K on it and 3 month warranty.

Anyone know of any better options?

Please tell me I read this wrong.
Your replacing the hole engine just because it blown a head gasket
Why not just replace the gasket?
