Hey guys

Fitted up the 1L transfer to my sierra today and just as a test gave it a run with the tail shafts out

Its a 1.6L with standard sierra 5 speed

At 4000rpm the speedo was reading 90kmh in 5th gear

Does this sound right????

Have not drove the car even before the conversion so cant compare to what the speedo used to read.

Car will be running 31's when finished, just using the 1L transfer till i can get some more coin for a set of gears

Cheers

What tyres are you running, if stock, sounds fair.

The speedo drive is after the transfer reduction, so only diff gears or tyre size make any difference to the accuracy of the speedo. Sorry if you already knew that, but lots of people overlook it.

Yes, that's about right. Once you put the 31's on, you'd be traveling at nearly 110km/h with the speedo showing 90km/h and the engine spinning 4K.

Steve, on the Maruti I have, everything stock as far as I know, except the 1.3l and 5 speed box in place of the 1l and 4 speed, at 100ks by the speedo in doing around 95ks (gps speed), on 31s.

Yea I know, but without knowing how to do the sums, or the box ratios, its a mystery. The bloke I bought it from bought it off another, an has no history.

It was running on 215R 15s, can't get them in OZ anymore, well, me mate at bridgstone tells me so, an as 1 was rooted, I put 31s on.

Around 3,500rpm at 100ks on the speedo.

I'd say it has a 1.3 transfer case, or something like that.

Correct! But what about the speedo drive gear ratio at the back of the transfer that coincides with the diff ratio the vehicle came out with? i dont think all speedo drive ratio's are teh same from 1l-1.3nt-1.3wt.

Isn't the 1.3l transfer gears higher than the 1l, if so, if it had the 1.3l transfer, wouldn't that mean it goes faster, not slower ?

The gear ratio's are numerically lower in the 1.3, you will go faster compared to the 1.0.

Yea exactly as I was thinking.

In my case, id say it has a set of some form of reduction transfer gears.

if you put a transfer with 1.3 WT SPEEDO DRIVE gears in a 1 litre with 31's, the speedo reads spot on

1.3 NT would be very close as well

Had no tail shaft in, just wanted to see what the speedo read at about 3800-4000rpm.

I sort of understand what what your saying about the speedo drive but still cant quite get my head around it.

So a 1l transfer speedo drive turns the speedo cable at the same RPM at a given speed as a 1.3L transfer?

No because the 1L diffs have a different ratio (4.11) to the 1.3's (3.7 or 3.9). Given the same tire and same speedo cluster the speedo drive gear ratio is different to compensate for this.

yes, for any given speed, the cable spins the same amount of revolutions per km regardless of model

because different models have different diff gears that will effect this there are different ratios in the speedo drive

wouldnt Your speedo won't be incorrect any way cos you wouldn't have any load on the transfer or the engine?

I ment rpm not speedo
Am I still wrong?

Gearing confuses me to much

Post subject:  Re: Speedo reading Q's

3,000 revs, is 3,000 revs, be it out of gear revs, or towing a caravan up a dirty great big hill in low range 1st gear and struggling to hold the revs.

Load has nothing to do with it, load is an internal combustion and strain thing.

If you are an auto driver, you will see torque slippage so higher revs for the same speed, but not in a manuel.

No such thing as a stupid question, just stupid answers.

If you don't ask, how are you going to learn ?
