Gday folks, my fathers G16b is playing up, cold she idles at around 2,500 revs, it hunts and all sorts, have been told its the idle control motor.
How do you clean it, sort it out, any ideas or is a new one required.

by hunt the idles stays high and then slowly drops back to normal and keep doing it every time the load changes?
clean the MAF with contact clean, make sure none of the intake joins are leaking AT ALL, including vacuum hoses
for some reason all that builds up to upset the computer into making the idle go funny, always works for me

When its cold it stays at high revs, but then as it warms, it will change revs by itself, is very slow to return after a throttle blip.

yeah sounds about it, thats what mine does when it gets an air leak or the MAF is 'grubby'
use a bit more fuel than it should too?

Idle control motor is usually a replacement job. For the two I have replaced anyway.
Hunting idle with EFI is also a symptom on an air leak.
I would be checking for perished vacuum lines for air leaks before playing with idle control motors. Easiest way to check is to spray carb cleaner around inlet manifold and all vac lines. If idle decreases then you have found the problem.
Does the idle still hunt when at operating temp?

well call me an engine diagnostic specialist, woohoooo.
I downloaded how to check everything, an went and got dads car, first thing to check was the air filter, yea cool, then plugs, leads, then MAF, got to the plugs, an I had an epiphany, on a site that will remain nameless, but, its the only suzi site I am constant on, I remember reading that IF the coolant level is low, probs.
I thought, naaaa, nothing is as easy as that, but anyways, I popped the radiator cap, no water, added bit over 2.5 of water, and, bingo, seems prob solved.
The running temp idle went from around 1600 revs to 8-900.
Spoke to the ole man, he did have an unusual water loss problem, like, out of the blue, and so it got warm a little while back, had to stop the car, let her cool, added water and away he went, never rechecked.
So, thanks to the unnamed site, an a memory, lol, alls well.
Mechanic he uses told him the stepper motor, (idle motor) was NS and would cost about $250 or so to fix.
auszookers rule.

i know its a bit of a thread dig but just searched and found this. I just did a carby - efi conversion in my vit and my engine is hunting. I've checked the vacuum hoses, all seem fine. With the MAF, how exactly do i clean it? Had it out today looking at it, i know you use that MAF cleaner spray, any help on what exactly to do would be appreciated Brandon

Haynes manual is useless, just says check and replace if it's playing up.
Contact cleaner and a toothbrush on terminals?

Usually the spray pressure from the contact cleaner is good enough to clean it up. I'd be careful sticking a tooth brush down it.

Yeh i noticed being that weird shape it may be difficult to get inside it. So might try just nuking it with the cleaner and see if i have a win.
