Hi All,
Well i've hopefully solved my problem with the gearbox on my '81 Hardtop
Bought the 'gear shifter bush kit' - $26.50 incl. express posted. (ebay)

Which came with a new dust boot, small washer, shifter bush, and a nice thick painted top washer/plate.
Upon removing the gearstick for the first time - i had an interesting find!!

NO bush! (while some of us like that! - in this instance i was just confused and amazed!! haha) Obviously the lil zook had a problem in the gearbox before i had bought it - and a 'homemade' setup was invented. a SPRING between two washers!

Below is the difference between the existing top plate and the new shiny red one!

Hopefully this will have fixed the problems i was having - Wouldnt shift into second sometimes, and could get out of fourth sometimes!??
Just have to wait for the mrs to come home so i can take it for a little test run....

I got a new kit a while back for my sierra, had a bush to go around the sphere shaped section on the gear stick to make it nice a snug to change gear, recently checked it as it had developed a lot more play, lo and behold, its no longer there.

My top plate isn't red though, maybe thats the problem.

Any ideas anyone? i might re-adjust the clutch?
