My carby on my 85 lwb n/t is rooted. I bought a donor car and after a couple of goes at it both carbys have pretty much died of old age.
So I need a new carby. I was thinking just slap a reco one on and go my merry way, BUT.
My zook is my daily driver and i've done 75,000k in just over 2 and a bit years so I was thinking spend a bit more and get something new and not have to worry about it again.
Seeing the k's that I rack up, It needs to be good economy. I was getting about 9.5 liters per 100k from my old carby so i need to get that or better :D
If I go to an after market carby, would I get just as good fuel economy with the right setup? Most people generally go for more power, but i'm not fussed with power, im after the economy.
B4T said a 4k corolla carby was good, but did get 150k out of 35 liters of fuel, not quite the way i was thinking, but was that just the big tires and gearing on his old 4by?
So just wondering what is out there. Options that I can do.

get the carby rebuilt, not some gaskets slapped in it, properly rebuilt good and new, fitted and tuned by the carby shop then dont ever touch it

There is too few things can go wrong with a carby and too many things well intentioned person without the knowledge of them can stuff up, thats why people all perceive they have problems with them

x3 I got mine rebuilt at a carbie shop 2 years ago, put a snorkel on it(as he suggested) and haven't touched it since. Still starts every morning on the choke, does what it is suppose to do 100% of the time. Costs a bit, but :roll:

Ive got an injection kit here that was ment for a Swift. If you could get the dizzy working it would be an easy way to get EFI. Ive never really looked into fitting it as i didnt care that much about the efi thing.

$100 and its yours.

So the best option for economy is to get it rebuilt properly? Any recommendations on where to get it done in Melbourne? Suziworld wanted about $500 for a rebuilt which seemed a bit pricey, but is there anywhere else? A recommendation is better then wasting money :D

it did 10L per 100kms with 29's. it will work fine for a stock cam also i believe :D

Thornbury carburettors and EFI, High st. Thornbury. One of the few carby guru's left. Will HIGHLY recomend him.

I don't know sierra carbs but $500 isn't a bad price. for how simple carby's seem there is alot to them when it comes to doing a full rebuild.

There is a carby shop on high street in Northcote. ,maybe try there.

Suziworld quoted me $395 for the same thing yesterday? the full rebuild also included boring out all the worn parts and putting in brass bushes, So it is quite a bit of work. acutally he MAY have been saying it was $395 to do this ON TOP of the noremal reconditioning, im not sure.

He doesnt actually do them himself, he sends them to a carby specialist.

I just took it appart and cleaned it and it is fine now. Next time something like this happens I will bite the bullet and put in my GTI engine.

Note to all, when cleaning your carby
My eyes still hurt from putting compressed air in the small venturi and it spraying carbie cleaner out the main air bleed tube which was aimed at my face.. dont do that.
