Well my engine is using plenty of oil Seems to be ok at idle but when you accelerate loads of smoke comes out I'm thinking its the rings, whats the best way to check this? If it is this how hard are they to replace and what is involved and what else should be done at the same time? What else could cause lots of oil use? engine is at about 220k |

does it blow smoke after youve been idling a bit or would it still blow smoke if you had been sitting on 80 for a while and accelerated? valve stem seals are pretty common, could be that |

Do a compression test and record figures. Then put a squirt of oil in each cylinder and test again. If rings are gone there will be higher readings 2nd time with the oil. If you have to ask what is involved in re-ringing then maybe you should get someone else to do it/show you or get a replacement engine. |

sounds like the rings are stuffed.....look in ur air filter box and see if there is any oil in it if there is take the pipe out of the air filter box to the rocker cover and put it down the side of the motor it will stop the smoke and help it not get as worse....needs new rings but might as well rebuild the motor i could be wrong.....look for leaks anywhere cheack ur water might have done a head gasket |

Il get a compression test done monday. Don't drive it a whole heap but when I leave it in the driveway ideling and let it warm up it still does it. How does moving the rocker cover breather change anything? There was a slight amount of oil in the hose. |

In my experience it's more common for the valve stem seals to leak than the rings to wear out. I've done the seals with the head on but it's pretty tricky. I would look for another donor motor in better condition. |

definitely check the stem seals... had a had problem recently that turned out to be undersized valve guides on the intake side dragging oil through, as well as new (5000km old) stem seals going hard as a rock. mines an extreme case, but while all symptoms were saying rings it was all in the head. |

Any reason for the stem seals going hard? |

they have no idea... can only blame it on a bad batch / manufacturing issue. |

There was a slight amount of oil in the hose. If its blocked, then there's nowhere for pressure to escape... Result, oil forced out where it shouldn't be by the pressure. |
