hi guys
hoping someone here can help i have a 98 gv and want to put 5.12 ratios in
i took it to a diff place in perth who said they could do it they then got the 5.12 ratios in and then they said theres no way they could get them in
as the crown and pinion was bigger and a few other things didnt line up
is there a place in perth that can do this and what do you have to do to get them to fit
as i was under the impression they could just be strait swapped in an out
any advice would be appreciated

Did they order brand new R and P's?

What model did you get the R&P's for??

I have 5.12's in my 99 GV as many others do....

The most common source of 5.12 R&P's is from the 1.6lt LWB vitaras and the diff centers will bolt strait into the early GV's with the only differences being that the rear diff carrier will have the upper control arm mount cast into it but can still be used without issue and also the front diff centers are in an alloy carrier which will bolt strait in but is not up to the job strength wise also the fronts came in either 22 or 26 spline....Your GV has 26 spline front drive shafts.

Most people remove the front R&P from the alloy carrier and have it fitted to the GV's factory steel carrier which is a strait fit BUT if you want to get rid of the GV's compressed air driven auto free wheel set-up at the same time you need a 26 spline vitara front diff (93 onwards from memory) or use the vitara's 22 spline LH front shaft and build a hybrid RH shaft from the vitara's inner stub with the rest of the shaft the original GV item..

Other options to get rid of the GV's air disconnect when converting the front diff include using sierra rear hemisphere (26 spline) and also using the ARB RD88 air locker (with machining to RH side gear to insure proper CV shaft engagement).

The most strait forward option is to simple take the vitara's front 5.12 R&P only and have them installed in you steel GV front carrier but then you still retain the factory GV air disconnect thingy.

The list just goes on does you front diff have slop/play in the RH diff output causing the seal to leak? If its a 98 GV most likely it will have excessive play here even if it is not leaking it will leak sooner or later if not rectified as most have been serviced at private workshops who are not aware of the recall on these models that necessitated a revised oil level in the front diff to combat this wear.

Are you confused yet I am!
