I got the time and the car to do it on and for under $100 i don't really mind if it is a waste of time. |

all good, found what i was looking for. If anyone was interested the paint you need in australia is International Brightside paint. It is a marine grade paint and can be found at BCF and other marine stores. |

Wow that is too much work, I nearly fell asleep watching the 3 days to paint one small tank. Seriously if you want to do that much painting, sanding and buffing why not just use an acrilic laquer that dries is seconds |

From the results that this paint has got in that thread it gives a lot better results than rattlecan's do. I don't have a booth for spraying and this method makes a lot less mess than spraying techniques. It is also more begginer friendly. I wasn't intending on doing it to a zook but depending on the outcome I might give it a go. |

A decent spraycan and a bit of skill and a rattlecan job can look amazing 
I use the spraygun occasionally, but it's too much hassle for touchup and painting barwork on my Zook Roller takes quite awhile too.. |

no they don't have too many colours. They do have a green that you may be able to tint to close though, here is the colour list: http://www.yachtpaint.com/USA/general/c ... psides.asp I'm thinking going with gloss black with steel grey stripes over the bonnet and cab with steel grey barwork for my sierra.. |

When I was about 9 I watched a guy at Mangrove Mountain near Gosford repaint his in black with a brush "because thats how the factory did it". This guy was a top class spraypainter and the Healey turned out beautifully.. |

Greetings from Hong Kong, auszookers. Seen a couple of sick jimny's i'll post once I get back home. Glossy finish = no way. I repeat - nooo waaay it'll look good. One thing you'll notice about roller jobs is that the pics are all taken from 10 metres away... maybe wonder to yourself why that is. My roller job came up pretty well, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're a person with limited patience or just looking to save a buck - you will not save money by doing it this way - and your fingers will dissappear having been scrubbed away by the sandpaper you use to get it looking good. This approach worked for me as I had a 4 hr window of opportunity every sunday to get it done, so I could do section at a time, at my own pace. I got it done, but you'll go through more sandpaper and roller painting equipment that you can imagine getting it to a decent result. It's incredibly hard... well, maybe not hard, but time consuming and patience testing. PS - resale value of a roller painted car is $0, unless you've done a somewhat decent job. |

they were also painted in nitocellulose paint not enamel, acrylic or twopak. It was very soft and got a great shine when buffed and hand polished. the process was to brush many coats on sand flat and buff to a shine, oh and It only works on solid colors. |

it dries extremely hard when let to cure and will resist stone chips. resale value won't matter, the car is for competition use. with a decent amount of polishing it looks pretty damn good. this is plenty of shine as far as I am concerned (obviously half way through polishing panel) :

Great stuff is the White Knight Rustpaint that you can buy from Bunnings. Its not the cheapest stuff in the world, but it comes in about ten or so different colours, and comes in either tins or rattlecans. I bought a can and used a paintbrush on mine, came out a treat, plus touchups are easy with the rattlecan. |

I remembered I hate sanding and wont be doing any of this 300 coat bullshit, strictly by the can, sand exsiting paint to a decent surface, 1 or 2 coats of undercoat max a day apart and 2 coats of colour (white roof on mini) Then ill leave it a bit and polish it by hand and see what happens, if its any good ill do the rest of the car |

Well isnt this a shit idea  I forgot I have no patience for this messy ass shit, good thing ive got nothing better to do
A simple scuff of the existing paint turned into a 2 day marathon of sanding off all the old top coat and most of underneath back to metal in some spots cause there was some weird bubble shit going on that I had to sand out Then there were a few dents in teh roof I had to sort out cause somebody had used it to support a building being built or something, I got them bashed out a lot better than I thought but the 42YO hoodlining hasnt taken it well so ill be getting a new one of them, which means new windscreen rubbers and windscreen cause its buggered anyway
Ive done a few coats of primer where it was bare metal and just done the first coat of undercoat with a foam roller, following the instructions to not thin it, the shit dont self level, now my roof looks like a house wall maybe next coat ill use some thinners or just leave it and sand it flat later, doesnt take too long cause its only a small roof

Damn... i'm hanging for the weather to clear so I can do the same to my bonnet. It'll come up pretty well Royce, just lay a few more coats on then get busy with some very fine sandpaper to get it as flat as you want. If you roll lots of very very thin coats the texture is flatter and easier to level off if you need to. I reckon you might need to thin it down a fracco, it'll help keep the already rolled paint workable for longer too. This pic is shows my roller job - two coats done in cool weather, was gonna fine sand it back but I kinda like the texture... it suits the car
