I would remove it and take it to a radiator repair shop. . .

They usually clean them out (that's where we take tanks we need to clean at work)

Remove the tank. Add 1 or 2 litres of petrol and a few handfuls of blue metal gravel and shake the fark out of it. Drain, rinse and rinse again.

There's a "slosh sealant" than can be used to coat the inside of the tanks - after you've cleaned it, prevents it from rusting again, and also seals any pinholes.

Here the radiator shops will usually have it.

I unbolted mine, gave the outside a hit with a steam cleaner, removed the pickup tube, removed the guage sender, removed the anti back flow device from the filler, then gave the insides a good going over with the steam cleaner too. Just poked the steam cleaner nosle in each orifice and gave and blasted whatever I could reach.
Put the pickup/sender back on.
Pumped it up with compressed air to pop out the dents. - That got the old ticker going.
Flushed it with some clean fuel.
Then flushed it with a few hundred ml of metho.
Chucked it back in the car, all good.
