Post subject:  how 2 prevent mud flaps from being ripped off

as in topic, I was wondering how people prevent mud flaps from being ripped off when driving on or off big high ledges. I've seen chains or straps attached to mud flaps. do people just hook up bottom of the mud flap high up with that chain when off road so mud flaps are sort of flipped up or that chain work in other way. I'm putting new ones and don't want to rip them off. I want mud flaps hang to 300mm off the ground so reversing into/onto a ledge or rock will rip it off.
thanks for any new ideas.
Chris

Make 'em easily removable, or don't back up ;) I'm going to secure mine with a strip of 25x3 steel plate with a couple of pin thingies from the local trailer joint. That way should only take 30 secs to remove and refit them when airing down and up.

My long flaps were tethered by an adjustable nylon strap like they use on back packs etc.

One got torn off by Polar_Bear up at Morgan, so I trimmed them down & they're now probably to short to be legal. They're still tethered by the same nylon webbing/strap but they're not adjustable anymore.

you can get an alloy extrusion called sail rail normally for holding awnings and another that slides into it, you can make them removable then

Are you sure it's from dropping off ledges and not from reversing over them? The chains are usually there to stop the mud flap being able to swing forward and get stuck between the tyre and rocks/logs/bogans as you reverse over them. That's how I ripped mine off :)

You can make removable mudflaps by slipping tube inside the rear crossmember. We did this with the trolley tug.

thanks for ideas, I thought about making them removable, but if they are on while off road than there is less cleaning after:) I probably make them with straps or chains and see how that works

Hinges and something to secure it to on your rear bar. Mine will be finished in a few weeks. Checkerplate off the rear bar, hinge, screw the rubber onto a small plate at the hinge. havent thought about how to secure it up out of the way yet though....Chain and a clip or something maybe.

I used hinges to secure flaps of rubber, then used a chain to stop rubber from catching on wheel. Ripped em both off first couple of trips out, you can stop it. Never thought of removeable flaps tho, hmm....

Yeh mine will be chained so they are parallell to the road when wheeling!
