Has anyone on here rebuilt their 5 speed out of a sierra. I just finished replacing the bearings in mine and checked out the gearbox Now it sounds like the gears arent meshing correctly in 3rd-5th Other gears are ok. Anyone know what it could be? I thought it might be cause i didnt press the counter shaft bearings in far enough. Although the circlips went back on properly. Im gonna be splitting the box again but i wanna know what to look out for. It happens when the transfer is in neutral, at idle and the gears are selected. Any help would be awesome. |

when the transfer is in neutral the gears in the case are still turning, they're just not driving the output shaft. it could be the higher speeds it's rotating at (you say 3rd to 5th only) the gears are turning but no load on them. could also be a similar story for the gearbox, rotatong at high speeds with no load. it could be considered normal. have you taken it for a drive? does it do it under normal driving conditions? |

Also just check your clutch is fully disengaging, if its dragging slightly it will make gear changes rough. Easy to adjust, and much simpler thing to try than ripping the gearbox out again. |

nah its never done it before, im sure its not the clutch cause the gearbox stops turning over when the clutch is pressed. I think it may be an alignment issue, i just wanted some advice on if anyone else had had experience on rebuilding these boxes. The gear shifts are smooth, just the gears rattle like they are not meshing. |

so third and fifth make noise sitting still but spinning? have you driven it yet? its pretty hard for teh gears in a manual box to not be meshed and it wont do it in 4th cause its direct drive I would take it for a good drive before I pulled it apart chasing things that might not be there |

There is a sliding dog collar that needs to be fitted the right way around. I made the mistake when rebuilding mine, and it made the same noises as you describe. |

Where does the sliding dog collar sit? It does happen in 4th too, its 3rd, 4th and 5th. I havent taken it for a drive cause it has no rego. That does make sense royce 4th is a straight drive, i should've known that too! Thanks for all the advice. |
