What is the purpose of heat treating CVs?

why do they fail and crack?

if they are tempered they will become more brittle.

if they are stress relieved they will become softer.

There are a couple of places that have been very successful at heat treating Hilux cvs. There seems to be a lot of sience involved but when we tried it with Sierra ones it failed abysmally. I blue my first one turning around on grass.

If blowing cv's is your problem then I would recommend you look into birfield rings. They are a reinforcing ring which fits around the outside of the cup of the cv.

they break by swelling, CV's by design take the twisting load and force it outwards a bit so its stretching the metal, eventually it cracks

you can bet a CV the cracks the inner spider was lose on the splines so it gets forced open there, if it cracks the outer it was probably lose around the balls

what the rings do is add metal at a weak point and also shrink the whole CV top make it tighter, so its hard to get that outward movement

Yuri's (and a lot of others) rely on that ring making the outer stronger and shrinking it all, I think the heat treating may be more normalising after welding to bring it back to even strength, though harder would be harder to stretch so might be harder to then crack (bit like its hard to bend a file but easy to snap)

I think Yuris deal sounds pretty fair!!, we have a couple of pretty serious heat treatment vaccuum furnaces at work, ill get someone to take me thru the process.

I think it might be better if somebody jsut tells you what happens, going through it may get a little hot
