Got under the bonnet today for some routine maintenance and decided to find the engine number. Checked the build plate first and it said 1590cc, which sounded right, but then looked at the stamp on the lower left hand side of the block and it read '1690 cm3'. Is that usual for a G16b? I know it has had an engine swap (previous owner) and the last mechanic was a bit stumped as to whether it was a stock vitara motor or not (but he was a volvo specialist in Gladstone so I didn't expect much :P ).

Any ideas?

I though i was going blind too but i cleaned off the grime and it was clear as day - 1690 cm3. The only engine I can find of that capacity is a Lada Niva 1.6 :? . Also does it usually say EFI on the intake manifold? because mine says EPI - Electronic Petrol Injection. I'm pretty sure that's normal though...

1690 would be a 1.7 litre, so it would be a G17B

Yep, now seeing it in the light of day (I was looking at it late afternoon) it does actually say 1590. The gap in the 5 was a lump of well formed mud  . But it did reveal something else about it, the build plate says g16B but the engine number says g16A. And it's an EFI. WTF is going on with my car?!

Ah, were they injected as well? I thought they were carby over there too. could it be a 16a with a 16b head? I'm infused. Refused. Whatever :P

Well what does it mean? I'm just going off what I've heard people discussing on here, is it just a difference in SOHC and DOHC? :?

Ive gone under the assumption that Japan didn't change over to g16B name when they went efi, unlike Australia.
