well today i went to brunswick junction for a little play with the perth4x4.net boys.

Before i had even started this happened....

Image

but with the shockie gone, i was able to get some pretty good flex...

But, like all great things with 4 wheel drives, Something goes wrong...

And to show just how much flex there was...

It was a great day out though.

what I couldn't work out was how did you manage to break that shock, and what made you realize it had happened. I was thinking it was something like "was that a big stick we just ran over, or did something break?" i've been there many a time :D

Correct me if I'm wrong but haven't you over-extended the shock to rip it out the top like that? So if the car was bump-stopped properly it wouldn't have happened? Not having a dig at you..just asking but if so then its not really the product failing..its misuse. If something else happened then go ahead and bag calmini!

Calmini should provide bumpstop spacers with their so called complete suspension system but they don't amongst other issues I have with it even though I run this myself.

Nev08, not sure what you think stops the springs from falling out if it's not the shock at full extension.

That's the first shock that I've heard failing like that on a Calmini kit. Normally it's their front struts failing when fitted along with fresh springs and no weight on the front before the springs "settle".

nev08, the failure happened before i went offroad. i dunno when or where it did happen tho. because for about 3 weeks after i got it i was just doing city driving with 1 4wdrive trip that was extremely mild.

The whole kit has its short comings but if you look at the options the calmini kit is the future with out going SAS, it just needs to be fine tuned to work properly! I've put 18,000kms on mine & I'm still tweaking it!!

To sell it as a so call "complete kit" is a bit ruff but some simple modifications it could be alot better from calmini but again they are building to a budget & the shock selection isn't ideal.

Ive put bumpstop extensions in the rear of mine to actually get the stock bumpstops to load up on something , limiting travel slightly but in the same time I have increased rear shock length. My biggest issue in the rear was the tail shaft hitting the muffler & spring deflection this is all from trial and error.

In the front i made the mistake of installing the calmini struts, honestly I reckon the stocker struts would have rode better. I'll be taking it off the road soon to do version 2.0 on it & I've got bumpstop extensions to go in & I'll be dropping in some OME struts along with some other mods!

& coil bind also when flexing cant be good for springs either?

I run OME struts and it is a good thing. Coil bind is not good and I can't believe for the minimal increase in cost that Calmini couldn't have added some bump stop spacers. Their heim joint isn't too flash either but the kit is not a bad basis to build something from.

hey atari on outerlimits you made an idler arm brace/ or something similar (cant get onto outerlimits at the moment.)

do you reckon one is absolutely necessary when i go to bigger tyres?

and what did you mae the bumpstops out of and how did you stick them onto the existing ones?

yeah an idler arm brace is a good idea, after a weekend away wheeling there were signs of the stock bracket flexing & i know of someone folding the stock bracket on the track and had fun getting home with wheels that pointed towards each other like this / \

the only thing i still need to do with the bumpstops its to round off the square edge on the top because as the axle rotates on compression & extension the bumpstop sometimes just clips the coil and makes a noise every so often.
