Post subject:  what is this on the gearbox please

ok so i was wheeling on the weekend and the car started being funny not idling, but strange. it will idle fine but when i put it in to a gear of any sort it cuts out i can keeps the revs up which made me thing something was shorting and cutting the idle valve so i have tryed disconnecting some wires to the gear box and have disconected this particular one and looped it witha piece of wire and it ilds now so can some one tell me why and what this is for a switch on the gear box that cuts the ilde when put in gear and what triggered it????

thanks :)

gday zot boy,
one of the switches on the gearbox (possably the one you've bridged) is closed when you select 5th gear, this than operates a vaccum solinoid near the thermostat housing applying vaccum to the EGR valve which allows exhaust gas to be drawn into the inlet manifold when you select 5th gear. if the something in this system is faulty there is a chance the EGR valve is letting exhaust in to the inlet manifold at idle and screwing with the mixture. hence shitty idle.

hope this helps
Gav

no the 5th gear switch disables the egr system, sounds like you have a vacuum leak on one of those hoses

there is no correlation to the gearbox and the idel solenoid, you have some other problem effecting the idle
