I got couplertec in 6 months ago and the guy said most of my current spots of rust would turn a little black. But I'm not convinced it's working properly...

I got my Electronic Rust Protection System (ERPS) fitted at TJM after I'd bought my car new in 2005 and the Jimny has seen a little salt water (Fraser Island). I got it because a friend had one fitted to his car and it appeared to be doing a good job (ie vehicle age and the type of work he was putting it through). On the model I got, the company will guarantee the vehicle from rust for life if you get it fitted before getting it road registered! A few points to note however that are not explained properly when you get it fitted:

1. You still need to clean the vehicle thoroughly including under-body after a trip, especially after beach work. A pressure can of lanolin and other surface protectors are provided with the kit.
2. Most importantly!!!!! The guarantee is only good if you have the ERPS inspected every year (ie more $) after fitting by a qualified 'ERPS technician'. TJM did not tell me about this when I had it fitted (interestingly I only just pulled out the paperwork the other day while I was tidying the garage). I may have been the only case and others probably have been told upfront however if I knew upfront, I probably would have hesitated about the need for it (ie. is there any real saving).

If you’re buying a new car, it might be a good investment. I wouldn’t bother with a second hand vehicle.

im not convinced.

In chemistry we did a prac where we tested them against a big brick of metal (one that is more reactive then the car) I think it was zinc but cant remember for sure. Its called sacrificial corrosion (check out wikipedia if your interested) and worked better then the ERPS, but for the record, i wouldn't trust either, better off just cleaning reeeeeeeeeeeeeeealy good

Was talking about this with an old timer that drives a 92 landcruiser on the weekend that has taken his rig to Fraser over 100 times. He is certain they work. He is very fussy about cleaning and reckons that new stone chips down to bare metal underneath have stayed shiny for months...

I am confident that te ERPS brand one I have works, I am also sure that plenty of the cheap ones out there do nothing at all

but I guess unless you can put 2 identical vehicles through the same stuff 1 with 1 without youll never know

even 2 of the same model can do the same things and one will rust, one wont, rust proofed or not
