Hey all,

Recently purchased a 2015 Suzie Grand Vitara 4 cylinder petrol with 75,000kms on it. Very tidy in and out, good service history. Test drove well, idled well. Purchased off oldies who had upgraded to the new Jimny. Since owning we have only put 98 in it, however has spent most of it's life in regional QLD. Over the course of the first 2 weeks of owning noticed some long starts on initial start up. After first start, any proceeding starts fired over quickly (eg long start in the morning driving to get groceries, quick start in the carpark to come home again). Shortly after noticed random intermittent rough idling immediately after start up and first reversing out of garage, which would then smooth out fairly quickly. Rough idling wouldnt occur at any other times driving, just after first start up in the mornings.

Partner drives to work, on drive back home check engine light comes on and cruise control is disabled. Following day check engine light is no longer on, cruise control is active again. Within the next few days check engine light comes back on, cruise control is disabled. Take into mechanics, at which time check engine light has disappeared again and cruise control is functioning normally. They see both a quick start (taking it into the shed shortly after I drove it there), and then a long start the next day when they begin diagnosing. They notice fuel pressure dropping quickly after turning off engine, they suspect fuel pressure regulator. They also mention battery voltage is on the lower end, but dont suspect it to be culprit. They go to get quotes but cant fit us in for a while, so we take the car and do their suggestions of priming engine in the mornings to see if that improves start time and attempt to put fuel cleaners through full tanks to see if that makes any difference.

Priming generally improves initial start time, although some long starts persist. Fuel cleaners don't make any measurable difference. Check engine light comes on again, which we get read at Supercheap down the road before code disappears - P0301 misfire in cylinder 1 as well as B1504 Sunload Sensor and/or Its Circuit Malfunction. We replace all 4 spark plugs, and book car back in to get looked at. Take it to mechanics, they cant see any current or history of codes... They suspect it is the fuel pressure regulator, but arent certain thats what it is.

Fuel pressure regulator is internal to the pump and apparently Suzuki recently superseded fuel pumps models. Looking at $4.8k quote... Is there anything else I should be looking at to diagnose or investigate, and how does that quote sound for fuel pump plus all the bits it needs + installed?

Symptom Summary
- Long starts on first start, following starts fine
- Rough idling randomly on first start up/reversing
- No lagging/sputtering at high speed or uphill
- No stalling
- No black smoke/fuel smell
- No whining or sad sounds from engine
- Engine misfire codes on cylinder 1 randomly, generally resetting itself
- Cruise control disabling when engine code present

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated considering the quote we just got 8O

A faulty fuel pressure regulator is diagnosed by checking fuel pressure. Has this actually happened? you don’t mention it.

Are you sure the pickup screen on the pump isn’t just blocked?

I’d make sure the diagnosis pretty thorough before scattergunning the car with parts.

Cruise control being disabled is just a result of the check engine light. It’s not related to the fault.
