Hi all, has anyone ever put one in an sj50 sierra, I've been offered a turbo motor mated to a 5spd box and transfer case. just seeing the difficulty involved
Yes it’s been done. Spend lots of time on a gearing calculator (like grimmjeepers) to work out if the narrow powerband of the diesel will work for you. Generally, a diesel can be made to work on road or off but not both.
The turbo will help with the lacklustre performance of these engines (less torque than a g16b, same power as a 1.0 litre sierra) but it won’t solve the gearing issues. Generally if you want decent off road gearing the road gearing is way too short for cruising. The increased torque of the turbo won’t help driveline longevity.
Is the engine in good condition? Inability to find good engines and parts was a major hurdle to this conversion even 20 years ago, and a central reason the one I’m aware of locally was converted back to G13.
I can’t speak to the specifics of the conversion, I haven’t done one.
