After my recent G16b cooking episode in the sierra, I've been on the lookout for a spare motor in case mine packs it in. Today I picked this fine specimen up:

A fuel pump and #3 spark plug got the motor running like a champ, so happy there. It happens to be a 4 speed auto too, which is good. What's not good, is that it doesn't really drive.
It selects all gears fine, and reverse is perfect - Hooks up and goes like a rocket, however when in drive (or selecting low gears) it just feels like a badly slipping clutch in a manual - the revs just flare up and you go nowhere fast. Fluid was low, I've topped it up but no change.
I haven't really put any time into diagnosing it yet. I'm more wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar, or has any ideas to save me some time?
Car has 220,000km's and I noticed in the service manual that the auto had a service at just over 200. my understanding is the AW4 is fairly robust, and should handle these k's fine. it may of just had an event that killed it (like ran out of oil or something) or could something simple make it behave like this?
