This was the original chassis, I later swapped the draw bar from 35x35 to 50x50 for peice of mind.

Tested the draw bar length and forgot to factor in the spare wheel as i wanted the tailgate to open with the trailer on.

The frame was added on, next was the tailgate.

Test fit to check the angle of the trailer on the sierra.

Next is the sides, wheel arches and cover over the top.

Rego before Easter and then the kitchen part will start, the trailer will only loose 300mm of space from the rear, the kitchen will be made of a 20x20x1.6 shs frame, a small sink, water pump tap, stainless bench and another fold out table for extra space.

Bit of an update, sides are on. Went will alloy sides and etch primed them. Mounted on guard with the gas bottle/jerry can mount sections. Still have to knock up the other side then a bit more etch priming before paint. Chose white knight kill rust charcoal hammer tone. Plan is to complete just a normal trailer then after easter the kitchen and camping stuff will happen.

All etch primed then first coat of charcoal hammertone.

Looking good...
Considering the light weight materials you've used, it still looks nice and solid.

Can you fit jerry cans on the side pieces in front of the mud guards?

Looking good, have you weighed it?

Author:  coily96 [ Tue Mar 24, 2015 8:01 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Another camping trailer build

I can fit one 20L jerry on each side at the front, that doubles my fuel capacity.
One the rear behind the guards will be a 4.5 gas bottle and a 10L water jerry on the other side.

The frame is split between using 35x35 and 20x20 shs, all the weight is in the wheels, axle and springs. Everything else is alloy.

Have not had a chance to weigh it yet, not sure where to go.

This was a test fit for the fuel and gas.

I also lowered the spare tyre holder down.

Im a fan!
Is this for the sierra?
Are you using the standard tow bar.

Yeh for the Sierra, hayman reese 450kg towbar and standard hitch for now, bit of a rush to get it done before Easter.

Gone are the days of cramming two adults a 3 year old, two small breed dogs, luggage, food and tools in the sierra. Will be good to double the fuel capacity too.

All the paperwork is done for rego, just need to get a vin plate and issued vin number. Final coat is on, lights, floor and cover for the top almost done.

Still need to do a safety chain, mudflaps, reverse light and number plate light.

Awesome! Yeah paper work was a bitch on mine. But it is awesome having a light little trailer for a small car

Almost there, has rego. Need to add two jerry can holders, mudflaps and seal all joins and corners with gap filler.

Used a VT commodore strut for the lid, worked out better than I thought.

There is a bit of technical crap involved in calculating where to mount these.

Thanks, it made the 550 km trip to Rainbow Beach and back for Easter. Towed really well after playing with the tyre pressure to stop it bouncing and one leaf still needs to be removed.

Nice work.

Good to see you have a lid for it but just be mindful, if you take the lid off, Learn from ehem... someone I know very very closely and make sure the tailgate is tied down somehow, ratchet strap, bunji cord or similar, because the tailgate may decide to eject itself from the hinge and get dragged along the ground with nothing but the numberplate light wiring preventing it from hitting other cars or people. My "mate" now always ties it down if the lid isn't on it.

I put up with funny noises for a while as the NT transfer I was using did a bearing, did a 9 hour drive like that.

Running the G13BA which seems to be bullet proof and very reliable, 6.5 gears. I was supprised towing the trailer over Easter, sat on 110 easily but I prefer to cruise at 95.

Good advice, might add something that only lets the tailgate lift up when open.
