Post subject:  2003 Grand Vitara front diff ratio question

Greeting fellow Zookers! yess!!

I'm looking for advice/suggestions on sourcing a ring and pinion for the rear diff of my Jimny please.

I'm hoping to get a 4.3 ratio ring and pinion from the front diff of a V6 Grand Vitara which should be in the 98-2005 models. The plan is to swap the ring and pinion into my broken 2008 Manual Jimny rear diff which I've pulled and confirmed is 4.3. This will hopefully fix my Jimny diff and make it stronger. This will include adding a solid spacer to the pinion shaft for additional durability.

I pulled a front diff out of an auto GV and found it has a 4.875 ratio as I hadn't done my home work properly... Hopefully I can sell it. :?

Undaunted I've now found a 2003 manual V6 GV at a wreckers. The build plate says the type is HTX92V built in 2003. Putting the vin into the supercheap auto parts finder says the car is an XL7 JA627 TX92V 2.7L H27A V6.

I'm fairly confident it will be the right ratio but can anyone confirm this manual Grand Vitara will likely have a 4.3 ratio in the front diff? Does anyone know if I will need to use the pinion housing out of the GV rather than stick with the Jimny one?

Thanks in advance!

OK I might have answered some of this.

I'm told by multiple people that the front diff from the V6 Grand Vitara in the SQ625 series is compatible. The Suzuki part number for that ring and pinion set is 2730056861 https://partsnavigator.com.au/search/su ... rce=ilcats

The Ring and Pinion set for the JA627 Grand Vitara is a different part number 2730054830 https://partsnavigator.com.au/search/su ... rce=ilcats

I don't know if Suzuki makes identical parts and then gives them different numbers but it seems like a risk for me to buy a diff out of the JA627. Even if it were the right ratio 4.3:1, it might be a different size or have different mounting hole locations etc.

Still keen to hear if anyone has some useful knowledge on this.

Not sure if you’ve found this thread.

Most suzuki 4x4 diff centres in the jimny/vitara family are swappable to some extent, and if you can’t find confirmation it’s worth the gamble.
Sometimes you do need the matching side gears, or adding shims or crosspins aren’t held captive etc.

I’ve got a Sierra hemisphere with a Sierra auto locker and vitara cw&p and unknown side gears in my vitara. And have seen lots of mix and match similar. I vaguely remember some of the bigger gears available didn’t fit in the Jimmy housing? Maybe?

Thanks shakes!

I found that thread after I posted and spent a while looking at it last night. I'm not sure what all the stats relate to in terms of which ones are manual or auto but can be kinda confident from other threads and sites that the 4.3:1 is always the manual. Do you know what the 14cv, 173cv and 185cv refer to? I could take the gamble and pull out a diff from a 2.7L GV I've found but I wouldn't know if it was compatible until the diff mechanic goes to install it. Do you know if Suzuki sometimes gives different part numbers to parts that are identical? I'm not sure why the crown ring and pinion set for the 2.7L is a different part number from the set for the 2.5L. :|

XL7 diffs are different.
cv I suspect is a wierd HP measurement.

I think you are right it's some sort of HP unit.

I've managed to find a front diff from a 2002 manual V6 Grand Vitara SQ625 so I'm all good which is a relief. Can't' wait to get my Jimny back on the road enjoying the 1.6 Swift Sport motor while not eating the rear diff when I put my foot down, which I'm inclined to do.

I wonder if the entire SQ625 diff centre can just slot into the Jimny diff housing rather than me needing to taking out the ring and pinion and put them into my existing Jimny rear diff. Might see if I can find a thread on that.

Post subject:  Re: 2003 Grand Vitara front diff ratio question

Just found this posted on my Jimny FB group. This sounds about right from what I know so far. Glad I didn't buy a front diff from an XL7.

"The v6 grand vitaras from 1998 until 2005 had 4.3s, not sure if they all did but thats the only ones that had 4.3s and the front diff was the same size crown wheel and pinion as the jimny rear. The third member does bolt in however the vitara front diff has a vacuum actuated centre for its 4wd, so the best way to do it is take the crown wheel and pinion out of the gv and put it onto the jimny centre and in the jimny carrier. The xl7 from 2003 onwards had the same ratios however it had an 8 inch front diff so will not fit."
