Post subject:  SJ80 Fumes in Cabin

I picked up my 97 SJ80 Sierra a few weeks ago and have dug through many many articles looking at how to stop the fumes (I believe from the carby) coming into the cab. As far as I've been able to establish... It has a webber in it so no longer uses the fuel fumes, meaning the fumes are just going to atmosphere. Could also be due to the exhaust being straight rather than having a bend to exit behind the rear wheel. Does anyone have any ideas or articles i might find useful so that I don't gas myself out!

It's a soft top with a flexiglass canopy, so there is quite a big gap where the rear door closes that I'm yet to close up. Also I've seen fumes can come in through the plug holes in the footwells, mine don't have covers.

It's running quite rich but is a really neat little car so not overly concerned that it's mechanical, I've had a bunch of people look at it who are more car minded than me but I'm here to learn, just don't want the fumes all the time!

Start by determining what fumes need to be addressed, exhaust or fuel? What do they smell like?

With a soft top, if the tail pipe goes straight out the back, then there is a high probability of exhaust fumes being sucked in at the rear, it really does need that exhaust to come out at the side, and you really do need to replace the rubber plus in the floor.

It’s the straight exit on the exhaust. Very common. The exhaust has to exit in the rear corner of the body as per standard or you’ll have fumes.

That’s assuming the odour is burnt fuel. If it’s unburnt fuel it will be associated with the removal of the charcoal canister/m and sealing of the floor bungs etc, but 99% it’s the exhaust.

Yeah if you route is as per standard exit fumes will be greatly reduced

Thanks guys!
I think i'll look at moving the exhaust exit and sealing up the back door a little better!

Send us a pic of how your exhaust sits at the back of the car.. If it's pointing straight back/out under the bumper that's probably the issue.. Go to an exhaust shop and bolt on a droopy tip to point it down at the road.

Nah that still doesnt work, needs to replicate stock exit.
Ive tried a heap of different finishes and they all fume you out

Worked for mine.. Maybe because I wasn't running the full soft top it didn't create as much negative pressure to suck it up the tailgate?

Your top was quite unique, never seen another in w.a.
No fumes in a maruti top either but any zook running a standard softop or hard top will need to copy a more standard exhaust exit or suffer fumes in the cab
