The stockman has the 997cc engine but I'm considering upgrading to a Sierra 1.3l engine. I'd probably up grade the front suspension as well. Is it an uncomplicated procedure? Any difficulties getting it registered in Queensland?

Hi Dave,
Welcome!.
This swap has been done plenty of times, but it's not what I would call 'uncomplicated'.
No idea what the process of engineering, blue plates or whatever is like in Qld, but it will need it to stay legal.
Stockman = LWB chassis is good, diffs should be W/T, T/case is 4WD light switched version.
F10 engine is a different 'family' to the G13/G16, so engine mounts need changing, current gearbox won't bolt to a G motor, so need one of those as well & the jack shaft.
Trans tunnel is narrow, so find a big hammer when the engine & box are out & wack it wider.
Use the G motor radiator, but the mounting arms need working on.
Lots of little things - like the bonnet of the 1.3Litre has a 'Power Bulge' - the 1.3 can be set low enough to clear, but watch the diff.
All doable though.

I believe all Maruti's have a wider tunnel to suit the G series style of gearbox, so you won't have to deal with that.

A blue plate is required for QLD as far as I am aware.

I'm going to make a suggestion though, unless you have a "known good" G13A/G13BA/5 speed donor ready to go, I'd give careful consideration to a G16B from a Baleno.

Assuming you don't have a donor, engine cost is the same as good running G13's are very thin on the ground. Whilst they feel better to drive than the F10A, they're not really all that powerful and for the work, it's a small gain. Additionally, the carb G13's are now getting pretty old and odds are someone's been in there "tuning" the carb and otherwise messing with it.

If it was a straight swap I'd say go for it, but considering it's a significant amount of work, it would be a shame to do the conversion and then find the "new" motor was in poor nick.


There's additional cost in the G16B conversion, you'll need an adapter plate for the engine to gearbox, Vitara extractors, and the sump and oil pickup from a G13, along with the fuel system and a loom (there are sources for complete engine looms) but it's a completely different league from a drivability and reliability standpoint - there's a good reason many 1.3 sierras get swapped to G16B. ~65KW/127Nm is a big step from 36Kw/80Nm.

The reason I mention it now is that the driver's side engine mount sits 20mm further back on the G16B. If you're going to weld mounts for a conversion, it makes sense to go for the best swap now.

The 1.3 gearbox should bolt to existing maruti gearbox mount as externally they are the same.
The radiatior and supports are also different but by spacing the rad mounts 10mm and drilling a couple of holes the 1.3 rad fits.
If you dont want to weld new engine mounts on for the 1.3 you can just bolt a piece of 6mm plate to the existing mounts and simply mark and drill 2 new holes each side for the 1.3 mounts and then trim plate to neaten up. Bolting the 1.3 gbox up will help locate the engine mounts.

*the maruti jackshaft works on the 1.3 5spd box and is also 20mm longer than a standard sierra one so make sure u keep it

*there are lots of stockman nt maruti's not just wt
