G'day guys, I haven't owned a 4wd before my 94 Vitara, so I'm not completely sure what the go is, but with the hubs locked in and my engine on but the vehicle stationary, I have no trouble shifting into 4 high but when I go to shift into low it just makes crunching noises. With the car turned off it will shift into 4 low but I'm not sure that I should be needing to completely turn the car off just to shift into 4 low.

Is my transfer case buggered? Do i just have to turn the car off to shift to and from 4 low? Definitely a n00b question but any help would be appreciated!

Try with the gearbox in neutral.
