Post subject:  Noob request for part# pinion dif oil seal on rear
Just noticed this leak, I’d say only started in last few months as I was last under there four months ago when I replaced an axle oil seal on left rear and changed the dif oil...this is new since then.

From what I’ve read the pinion seal could be of two measurements, anyone provide the part number or measurements for a 2011 Jimny ‽ I’ll be forever grateful!!

This eBay result suggests measurements 40x72x10 (for front & rear diff)
(40 mm internal diameter, 72 outer diameter, and 10mm width.)... but unsure if is accurate for a 2011

Not sure if you’re aware that replacing the pinion seal requires a new crush sleeve to be fitted and preload to be reset. It’s not a simple remove and replace job.

I was told that you can do it as long as you don’t upset the pinion bearing and you retighten the nut to its original position and pre-load. Im certain that’s what the diff genius here said.

Edit: having said that I don’t like messing with diffs, I’d take the whole pumpkin in and have a diff genius do it.

I’d tend to trust the factory to understand how to repair their cars.

There is no spec for preload on the nut, only preload on the pinion bearings (with the centre removed) or preload on the whole rotating assembly with the centre in place. A fairly wide range of preload is acceptable, but once the crush sleeve has been crushed once to achieve preload, it can't be reused.

If I had a 9 year old Jimny, I would replace the crush sleeve and check preload, as per the FSM, because the risk of getting this wrong will be rapid gear wear, and seal and bearing failure.

Well yeah, obviously.. I’m not sure what preload on a nut would be? Torque?

As for the crush tube, he says you can. If you retighten the nut to the same spot and the preload (preload on the pinion bearing to achieve a starting torque of 1.8-3.5kg in case this needs further clarification) is correct then it’s good to go. You aren’t re-crushing the sleeve or crushing it further. This of course wouldn’t apply if you were to remove or replace the bearings, pull the pinion out etc.

His opinion differs from yours.

Given that the service manual doesn’t provide specifics on removing the nut and flange to replace the seal with nothing else disturbed it seems reasonable to me.

Couldn't it be that the lack of specifics is because they don't expect you to do it this way?

Not sure why you’d replace a busted seal by dismantling the entire diff?

Anyway.. part number above for the OP
