I am putting the 30/9.5 tyres on my Jimny 2013 vvt hunting buggy. As advised by many on here I should be ok gearing wise for mainly flats work etc. but maybe not so on hills etc.

Only one property I hunt has a lot of hills.

Is the transfer case in the vvt ok, I have been reading here that it’s not that strong. Many have advised that changing the case for an auto one will give me the gearing reduction I need.

What other options are there to reduce the hearing to match the bigger tyre other then changing the transfer case, and should I be worried about the transfer case strength.

manual tc with 30's will make you ride your clutch much more than normal, auto tc will have it revving on the highway (which im guessing you wont be doing).

The only other option is to change the gearbox to a non vvt one so you can put sierra tc's in, but thats a lot of work.

The transfer will be fine strength wise, there's no strength issues with it.

I reckon the gearing will be fine too. A VVT manual Jimny running 30s is still geared lower overall in low than a 1.3 Sierra on standard (26.3") tyres. Your highrange would be a bit shitty for offroad work but I assume you'l be in low range the whole time anyway, I would be.

Another alternative is aftermarket crawler gears but IMO these will make your low range to low. You wont have much of a top speed so you'l always be changing between high and low and that would make me hate the car, especially with the electric shift.

You could cruise at 70km/h in low with stock tc and 30s. Up to about 50 with the auto transfer and about 35 with crawler gears (all at about 4000rpm).

Thanks sideways. That’s great to know. I’ll continue on and not stress about it to much.

I will be in low most of the time, it will only ever be driven off-road. I doubt I’ll ever drive much above 50-60. I may just put a wanted add in the classifieds for an auto transfer case just on the off chance someone has one, and I’ll keep it aside just in case.

For a hunting buggy your current transfer in low should be fine.

The auto case would be good also, high range will be better for accelerating etc. for a lot of highway driving it would be a little low. Why people say the auto is weaker is the chain in the transfer. Everything is the same strength wise but the chain, the auto chain is a little thinner. Still fine and strong enough

If it is just for bush driving then I would put a auto transfer in. Low gearing is always better I the bush.
