After some information regarding Running Temps on a G16b Efi engine in a Sierra Am running a New Sierra Aluminium Radiator and think everything is running/cooling ok, however reads a bit hotter that normal (just above halfway at what I am assuming is Normal Operating Temp) at the gauge? Have approx 75 degrees leaving the Thermostat cover to top tank and approx 55 going back into the motor at Normal Temps ( am using an IR heat gun taking readings in the shade) A short run up the soft sand and temp is climbing. About the only thing I have not replaced is the water pump. Am running a radiator shroud and have tried Viscous fan and a thermo with not much difference. I have a Oil Cooler for the Auto Transmission hard up against the radiator at the front and have tried Viscous Fan and a Thermo and has the same effect. Is a Sierra Radiator big enough to cool a G16b? Could the water pump be causing this over heating problem? (Have one and is the next on my list to change) Only happens under load, towing, hill climbs, soft sand etc? Any advice/info appreciated

How about some temp readings with the IR gun directly after that "short run up the soft sand"?

^^ yup
I thought mine was "overheating" cos the gauge would go from 1/3rd to just over half way when crawling around offroad... turns out there's only about 5 degrees difference in temp and it's perfectly fine.
I will add though, that mine then started getting hot like this on the highway, up to half way or so - and that turned out to be a leaky head gasket. Very noticeable when i started getting bubbles and a petrol smell in my overflow bottle!

After driving less than 4ks up the beach in soft sand I stopped as temp was at the very top of the normal operating temp zone on the gauge, Temp reading at the Top of the Radiator was 97 degrees. Let is sit for a while and drove back down the beach and was just starting to boil at the top of the access track/carpark  Is a Sierra Radiator to small ?

Which g16 setup is it? What did you do at the back of the head into heater tap? If it's a Vit g16b, did you remove the heater tap, or leave it?
What are your heater controls doing when you're getting temp spikes?

Is a G16b Vitara Efi engine. Have still got the heater controls hooked up but the Heat Control is jammed and am looking at it at the moment.

20deg c is way to much temp drop through the rad, the coolant is spending to much time in the rad and not being pulled out of the engine fast enough.
Max 15deg difference between top and bottom, where did u buy the rad from? Decent quality brand? When was the thermostat changed last?

Check your waterpump. How old is it? Maybe its lost pump veins due to cavertation .

Automotive water pumps are "stirrers" in a pressurized system - cavitation is almost never an issue.

from what i've been told timing can cause an engine to overheat. simple to check & if you're using an ecu from a different car to the one that donated the engine the timing will likely be out.
