hi guys. Ive been having trouble get the sierra into low range. Its a 94 with original transfer case. It use to go into low range but it never really felt like it had engaged properly. Now i put it in and it pops straight out. Ive checked the mount and have done the oil in it but still wont stay in gear. Is it time for a rebuild ?

changed your shifter bushing? do you run a bodylift? is the xfer lever being forced out of gear due to bouncing off the tunnel?

Take the rubber boot off the shifter and go for a drive. Probably worth popping the stick out and checking the bush as well.

The boot may be pulling the stick out of gear. And the bush may be cracked or have deteriorated.

I had this problem, the long side mounting arm bent and caused the lever to hit the tunnel.

Would be good to know what if you fixed it, have the same problem on my XL-7, but the Transfer case is different, gona take the Shifter out and see if everything looks good down the hole.. Originally i thought it was the transmission mount as the trans dropped a fair bit but wasn't the problem, just made it worse.

Have to figure out how to remove the Transmission gear knob, stubborn thing!

A rebuilt kit is a lot cheaper than a new case.

That's even if there were any "new" cases - there are only old cases with rebuild kits in them.

mines now working fine, just cleaned out where the selector stick goes into and re greased it.

There is also a circlip that can dislodge in the transfer case.

Gear slipping out of mesh Worn shift fork shaft:
Worn shift fork or synchronizer sleeve
Weak or damaged locating spring
Worn bearings on output rear shaft
Worn chamfered tooth on sleeve or gear
 Missing or disengagement of circlip(s)
