i see they are push button 4wd, is this shit or reliable?
will be running 235s, can i re gear it easy with 4.11 diffs out of a maruti, and are there air lockers for these?
what are the common problems new jimnys get?

speak to shep or stonedpirate & they'll both tell you that they are ghey.
auto's are weak from what i've read, air lockers are available front & rear, NFI about the maruti diffs but sierra xfer case swaps are getting common.

i see they are push button 4wd, is this shit or reliable? Some people have problems with the hubs, but sierra hubs fit with light mods.
will be running 235s, can i re gear it easy with 4.11 diffs out of a maruti, and are there air lockers for these? No. The jim runs 4.09's anyway, and the front is a high pinion, so there are zero gearing options for them.
what are the common problems new jimnys get? Wobbles! Lots of them!
any info is aprerciated. cheers joel

thanks pete. ah thought the jim had a different ratio thats alright. i owned a patrol a few years ago, so im familair with wobbles!
a few have told me, if i chuck a decent oil cooler on the auto it will be all good, i will be doing a fair amount of towing.
so the push button still keeps working but wont engage the hubs? replace the hubs with sierra ones and sorted, whats involved in that?

New or older? Older ones have manual shift
So far there are 2 diff gearing options (2 different jim models ratio's), and with a sierra transfer swap there are even more gearing options.
to fit sierra hubs you can buy conversion adaptor rings.(unsure where)

Run the biggest cooler you can fit and a temp gauge on the auto.
I'd loose all the solenoid/pushbutton rubbish and go to manual hubs, lever shift sierra transfer.
4.09 or maybe (almost impossible to find) 4.3 for diffs.
Rear R&P is interchangeable with sierra. Front is unique to Jimny.
Steve.

gregc has a pretty massive cooler on his G13BB/Jimny auto setup I think it's the biggest PWR cooler that's readily available. It still gets pretty warm, but only very occasionally. I don't know there's anything to copy per se - purchase one really big auto cooler and one temp gauge, plumb as appropriate.
Steve.

Steve. Having never added a tranny cooler myself, can anyone explain why and how? My Jimny is an auto...

It circulates the transmission fluid through a radiator style cooler. Brings the temps in the transmission down making the fluid last longer. The transmission heats up alot more under load, ie. Towing. If the transmission fluid gets to hot it burns out and doesn't do it's job efficiently potentially harming ya transmission.

Steve. Any jimny from 2005 onward's has 4.3 diffs, apart from the auto's which are 4.09. There are many different R&P diff ratio's available for jimny's. There is a jimny in Perth running 5.12's (5.14?, one of the 2, can't remember) diffs

IMO It is reliable. My t-case never had any issue's and always engaged when i hit that 4wd button, i miss the button's TBH As for the hub's, once again, never had a issue. They are no more or less reliable than manual hubs IMO IF you keep the maintenance up. I still run the auto hub's with the sierra t-case
will be running 235s, can i re gear it easy with 4.11 diffs out of a maruti, and are there air lockers for these? As Fatzook said, the AUTO jimny will run 4.09 diffs (manual VVT have 4.3, and there are diff gearing option's out there) and yes you can get air locker's F&R. what are the common problems new jimnys get? Wobble! any info is aprerciated. cheers joel Not sure how much reduction you would end up with if you were to chuck a sierra t-case behind a new jimny auto, but if you put one behind a new manual VVT jimny, you will end up roughly with 40% in high from what zukenutter as said. Here are the ratio's if anyone is interested http://www.bigjimny.com/images/document ... ratios.pdfNot sure why they got 3.9 diff's in the UK though BlueSuzy wrote: New or older? I had a list of all the ratios you can get, but don't know where it went. I'll try find it....

I have the jimny m13a engine/auto in my sierra and its awesome for crawling around . A few other members who have had a drive from tassie love it, can't wipe the smile off their faces . Changing from the nt sierra 3.9 to vitara 4.6s dif gears really helped my onroad power. I also have 4.16 transfer gears and 31" mongrels to give you an idea. I'm probably going to go to 33"s at some stage and i'm hoping 3rd is still nice onroad . Otherwise its playing with vss cog and 6.5 transfercase gearing for me. I have added a bigger auto cooler but never had a temp guage for it. I will put one in soon, just sorting out adequate connections for a t-piece at the moment. Cheers

I have had wobbles come and go. A short term cause can be mud on the wheels or in the beads.
A list of things to maintain to reduce or minimise wobbles... - Balance wheels & remove mud - Maintain wheel bearings - Keep steering components tight - Panhard bushes and bolts. Urethane helps here
Mine got so bad it was impossible to drive at 60k's. My final effort to reduce wobbles was shimming. It took away the death wobbles immediately. Have returned slightly recently but an extra couple of 10th millimetres should sort it I think. bigjimny sells shim kits.
I disagree that a Sierra transfer is a good option (by itself).
Assuming late VVT... Manual Gearbox T-case: High 1:1, Low 2:1 Auto Gearbox T-case: High 1.3:1, Low 2.6:1 (30% less in high and low when coupled with a Manual box, which is way to low in high on 29's IMO. This is why I have not done this yet.
Sierra 1.0L T-case: High 1.580:1, Low 2.511:1 Sierra 1.3L T-case: High 1.409:1, Low 2.268:1
So, if you start with an auto transmission, you will actually be going backwards. If you start with a manual transmission, your Jimny will be like a tractor on the highway with 29's and only 13% gain in low using 1.3L, or even worse with the 1.0L and 25% gain in low. If you add a set of gears, things don't get any better for highway. However, if you combine a sierra case with a sierra gear box and perhaps diff ratios, you can find a nice compromise, because of course, you'd be essentially running a Sierra drive train. And in my opinion, thats going backwards. You're buying a Jimny, not a Sierra. Not to mention, any Sierra box is a stick shift.
