hey, i've had a few people ask about my sand flag so here it is on it's own tread for easy location. try and get a 3metre length of 16mm OD and a 2metre lenght of 20mm OD and push the 2metre length onto the 3metre length, it can be hard to get 16mm condute sometimes, look around at places other than bunnings. pushing the 2 together can be a bitch, lube is your friend. this give it some good flex when it hits trees etc but will bee stiff enough that it wont crease and bend, using normal orange bunting flags drill 2 small holes at the top to mount the bunting flag and tie off. if you aren't using uhf mount on bull bar chop the head off, clean up and round off a long bolt that would just slip up into the ID of the 16mm condute and lock the bolt onto uhf mount with nuts, washers, spring washers top & bottom. on the back of the zook i bolted a tube to the spare wheel bracket thats almost roof height and the condute slides in. the peice of condute that i have been using would be nearly 8 years old & still going strong!

ur right. bunnings dont stock 16mm OD. only 20 and above. good 1 bunnings.. can u take a better photo of the pole u have mounted to the wheel carrier?? so i can see how u mounted it.. it looks like u have more room their than i do. i only just had enough room for the antenna mount i just made.. |

Hey Morpheus, it's literally a piece of tube bolted to the spare wheel carrier. the only reason u have less room would be because of my off set rims.... they were +10 & they're now -15 or something like that. i can take more pics but there isn't much to it? |

Is there a legal /lawful or sensible height for sand flags? I just got given a 2.3 mtre flexible rod (ex umbrella ribbing) Will need a sand flag at some point in the future. It is hollow, could run a wire up to a flashing LED |

I don't think there is a standard/legal height for sand flags... mine was 3m long & mounted at almost roof height, but a trip to the Beachport service station shortened it down to about 2.5m when it got taken out by roof over the pumps... Mine is mounted off the spare wheel holder & will be getting the LED treatment very soon. PanterA pioneered the LED sand flag & it's mega bright.

I wouldn't like a bright light bobbing around in front of me, but it sure looks cool. Maybe at the rear, can move the mirror to night. I thought a green one be more powerful |

Finaly got around to makin me flag. Cost $zero Lower half is heavy duty umbrella rib I scrounged off big brother. Top half is the tent poles from a cheapy tent I no longer use. ( Too slack to put up tents these days Inner elastic cord just needed a cut and reknotting. I found using just the tent pole was way to floppy. Mounts shoulds be self explanatory,' I used left over piped/wire holders from my wrecked Sierra. And a bolt thru bar to secure the base. Flag is the flag they gave me at my citizenship ceremony, I fly it with pride. Will probably put some hi vis tape on top, too. Talked myself out of wiring up lights to it. Would hate a light bobbing round in m y view. Didn't mount on the rear, because I knew I'd forget it was on, and drive under something and rip it off

but it sure looks cool. Maybe at the rear, can move the mirror to night. I thought a green one be more powerful Sitting in the car, you can hardly see any light, as the LED's only run up one side of the pole. The pole itself blocks out pretty much all the light coming back in to the car. It's handy for lightning up my cooking area etc, and is turned off with a switch on my dash. And makes for cool long exposure photos over dunes PanterA ... Forever Stronger Than All |

That's very cool, liking it even more. I have hollow tubing, so could run a flexi wire thru the guts of pole. With an LED at the top. |

PM me you address Chris & I'll post over a length of LED strip for you. i made the LED sand flag flare the same way as my LED rock lights, a section of clear PVC tubing & the LED's inside it for protection. http://auszookers.com/index.php?name=Fo ... ck&start=0 |

Hey guys, bit of a stupid question, but why do you need sand flags? Just for visibility? |

dave91 wrote: Hey guys, bit of a stupid question, but why do you need sand flags? Just for visibility?
visibility is the main reason, imagine on a single trail track & poping over dunes at a reasonable rate of knots & coming across a 4wd coming the other way + you can be down in a valley somewhere & basically be out of sight so it makes it easier to follow or spot where your mates are. on some of the real tight tracks, I'll actually give my horn a good couple of blasts if I've had to carry a lot of momentum to get up over a dune with a blind crest/bend. |

yeah, I figured that'd be the reason. How often does it help on trails? I've never been sand driving in dunes so wouldn't know about trails through dunes. The big LED pole on the cruiser, is that LED tape or one solid neon? |

i made the LED sand flag flare the same way as my LED rock lights, a section of clear PVC tubing & the LED's inside it for protection. http://auszookers.com/index.php?name=Fo ... ck&start=0 Thanks to Gus for the LED strip, and thanks to two old charger leads, and 800 metres of black insulation tape, my flag pole is alight. I left a loose bit of wire at each join in the pole, so I can still fold it away. Can't leave it on in Melbourne, so needs to come off. Its a rough ugly job, but I should only need to look at it twice a year, and it works good. May do a more proper job some time, one day get a round tuit etc day Not wired into the car yet, thats a daylight job |
