| Post subject: | how to replace windscreen in sierra |
g'day, i need to replace windscreen in my WT sierra. i have never done it before. i don't think that there is any silicon holding the glass, just rubber seal. i want to keep and reuse my old seal. it's good. can anyone give me advise how to do it. how to remove odl glass without damaging seal and than how to install new one. i don't have suction cups for holding the glass, but windscreen is flat and small so two person should be able to do it, correct me if i'm wrong. thanks a lot for any help kris |

I've done it a few times, i've also reused broken windscreens for offroad sierras, Just go slow and try not to bend the glass, don't force it too much. I put the glass in the rubber strip first then place that on the frame and just the slowly work the rubber in to the frame. Just take your time and it's not too difficult. |

Its a 1 man job on a sierra. No glue used uness you have a coily, in which case you will need a pro. Just do as steve said and fit the rubber to the glass. You can then slowly work your way around with a plastic scraper or even a flat screw driver. Or another method is to use a fine rope. You place it in the groove of the rubber all the way around and have the 2 ends hanging into the car. Then just slowly pull the rope out as you work you way around. This stretches the rubber mould allowing the body seam to drop in behind the rope as you go. Rope should be 4-5mm max. You can also rub some vaseline onto it which helps stop the rope from pinching the rubber. |

This. Just don't damage your rubber seal, AND WEAR SAFETY GLASSES! That includes re-installing the new one....just incase it cracks. |

prying glass from rubber seal from outside or pushing the whole lot from inside This is where you can practice by not cracking it any further, work slowley around it, peeling the rubber off the frame and working around it, stick some screw drivers in the gaps as you go to keep it spaced out, try not to bend it or it will crack, so by doing that you get an idea of how to put the new one back in PS. it will bend a fair bit, but you'll find the line when it bends too much |

From the inside, I start at the bottom of the windscreen. With your thumbs push the rubber up over the metal of the windscreen surround. Slowly work your way both ways evenly pushing the rubber up and over. It gets easier the further along you go. First one I did started from the outside with screw drivers and cracked the windscreen within 5 secs. Putting it back do the same in reverse. Some put string in the surround to assist in pulling the rubber up and over the surround. Never really needed the string to assist. Yes wear safety glasses. |

i did it the other day. its so easy getting out. i just put a screw driver under the rubber seal and pulled it out just enough to get some rope under it. the rope does the rest, just pull the two ends until the wind screen pops out geting it back in i sat the windscreen into place ont the bottom and levered the rubber from inside the car while pushing the windscreen into place with your thumbs from the ouside |

Good stuff. Started doing this myself last night, but felt like I was gonna F#%K something up, so I left it to seek professional AZ advice. Can a Mod plz move this thread to the 'Good Tech' section? |

i do windscreens, you can also run a rope in the rubber channel and sit the glass in and pull the rope and it will feed the rubber over the apature flange. it also helps with 2 people as the other person can apply pressure from the outside. i found this, same concept, hope it helps http://www.ih8mud.com/tech/glassinstall2.php |

I am having to replace the screen in my 1989 SJ50 Samurai / Sierra but have to find one first- what screens are the same which will fit - are they the same windscreen in a SJ410 or SJ413, what about the utes and soft tops and tin tops are they all the same windscreens? Yes they are all the same up til the SJ80's where they add an edge around it I have found out Thanks Andy Is it only the insane who answer their own questions, more than once Is it only the insane who answer their own questions, more than once |
