thats the 1st one i made for my green vit.

i made 3 more after that one. the 1st one i broke the splined end off in the diff centre. maybe too much heat when welded. what a PITA to get the broken peice out with our removing the diff.

2nd one cracked the weld/stub cos it was too long and the cv punched it. i made this slightly longer to clear the diff mount bolts.

3rd one broke cos i was giving it curry and there was really no support for the sub.

vit mods have come a long way since my green one.

Thanks for that.
Was concerned about the length issues you mentioned.
I'll make it as short as possible, ie just enough room for the weld.
I'm getting it welded up buy an experienced welder.
So hopefuly they get it right first up.
I'm going to use a flat head/allen key type bolt in the lower diff mount.
I noticed today that the passenger side is longer, so not much room for error.

Are you glad, or regret doing this mod?

I agree, I am still waiting for a mate, but will probably take it to an axle/tailshaft person to weld it. Cos I'm impatient.
I am going to make 2, so I can have a spare, just in case.

I've decided to pay an expert to cut and weld my stubby together.
Not worth the risk of me doing it.
Especially don't want a failure out in the desert.
They going to turn down the cup, lathe a locating lip into the flange bit, so it will centre properley, then weld it up, and " anneal " it, which I think means re harden?
Got a fair price for all thgat work, bit costly, but cheaper than having a complete stubby made, and bearing carrier etc.
Only having one made, due to price, and still needing to pay bills and eat :)
Shouldn't need a spare if it works right, and if it dont, then no point in having a spare yet..
Can do that another time if think its wise.

Generally when you anneal a metal you make it softer and easier to work.

ok that makes more sense in the way he said it.
So I assume anneal, then lathe/weld,
then hopefuly harden it again after?

Sounded a bit dear, till he explained what he would do,
then it sounded like a bloody good deal.
Now to raise the money.

nah, ya mum's useless to me.... i've got one already.

i think polar_bear paid $600 to get the 2 complete bearing carriers machined, stub axles annealed, chopped, resplined & rehardened including the bearing, circlip & seal.

p.s. polar_bear i'll be up your way on the weekend, do you want me do drop in & give you the cash or are you're working tomorrow?

They said "when do you want it."
I said "I can't pay till thursday."
They think it will be done by then, barring any problems.

Yeah, a mate of the old mans did the work for us, took a while to get done, but I was in no rush, and atari hasn't even fitted his after having it for 2 months, so its not as tho he was waiting on it either :finger:

he did the whole kit for 300 each, which I think is a good deal for the amount of work involved and supplying the bearing, seal and circlip.

now I think ataris making me wait 7-8 months for the cash

Social Security approved my advance on the disability pension, :D
which is a relief, cos I took a gamble ordering the work on the stubby

sometimes Ya Win 8)

Definately not a better choice than bearings and turned up stubbies,
but if it works out, I will be happy. :D
