Hi Guys, my first post on Auszookers and wanted to share some work I have done recently...
I decided to replace the flimsy plastic cover on the rear door of my Vitara. Found it was doing nothing back there, and would rattle and let dust in.
Decided to go for something more solid and picked up some 3mm black trailer plating. I used the plastic cover as a template to cut the steel.
The problem was how to get the sheet bolted on without pulling the door apart. I found I could use liquid-nails to glue the nuts on the inside. Waited for about a week just to make sure they dried solid.
Used black allen bolts to secure the steel to the door. All but 2 holes lined up perfect! To make the last 2 fit, I used a Dremal to grind the holes a little bit bigger and take of some of the sharp edges.
I really liked the way it looked. But after a month or two a fine rust dust started to appear over the steel. I found I couldn't spray a clear coat on it for protection due to it being steel.
Decided I would just spray it and be done with it. As I had already bolted it on I didn't want to risk snapping the nuts on the other side and decided it was easier to just spray it on the door.
Decided to go with Machinary Grey, altough, thinking about going over it with a Satin Black now. Not sure. But really happy with the way the finish came out.
