I was looking at arb and such roll out awnings and was pissed offf at the price, From 750 to 1000. So i decided to make one for the suzuki.
My design so far is this,
I have a 2.4 x 3.6m tarp
2 lengths of 2.5m long dowel
2 Tent poles
2 Ropes
2 Brackets for attaching to roof racks

So the main idea behind my awning is that i wanted to make it so when transporting it isnt wobbling around cause its so long and my racks are only 1mcentres. so its able to be folded in half.....This will be achieved by halfing the dowel, taking a cut of identical profiles out of one end of each and securing them together with a nut and bolt. Will put a pic up soon of how it has turned out.

laurie, thats a good idea mate i will look into it. firstly i was going to use pvc and have the dowel mounted in the centre of it and roll the tarp up inside the pvc but it all got too hard.

I looked at this option.

But decided to go with this one http://www.lcool.org/technical/sunshade/sun_shade.html

Got all the bits and pieces sitting at home, just waiting for me to make some mounts at the rear of my tray to support it.

wow, thats pretty much exactly what i was going to do but figured it would be too long for the little suzi racks. looks pretty neat in pvc though.

Ive seen two 4wd's locally recently that have an old canvas awning.
You know the ones, the striped canvas type that older houses have that pull down and shade the windows on houses.

Check salvage yards and garage sales, very cheap.

What is an ideal thickness/weight of canvas for awnings, i would imagine real thin stuff is the best?

Reason i ask is theres a bloke selling heaps of what i think are offcuts of canvas, of all different size and colours.

A mate of mine has a mate in Brisbane that custom makes these awnings for half the price of an ARB and you wouldn't pick the difference between them. My mate has one on his 4x4 and I'm looking to get one made for myself. if you like I can set my mates up, take some pics and post them up so you can have a look.

I dont personally know the guy that makes them, he is a mate of a mate, and it's my mate that has one, and it is top notch stuff. The guy that makes them does all custom work so all pricing would vary, so when I get a chance I will set up my mate awning, take and post some pics, and I will get this guys details and if he's ok with it I will post up his details so you can contact him or I can PM out his details.
Just give me a couple of days to sort it out.

Here are some pics for you all. I dont know the guy so his business detail are on the last pic.
Give him a call with the measurements your after and he'll give you a quote...He'll make whatever you want, he also will make walls to attach if thats the kind od thing your after......has to be better than ARB.

It does come with all poles, rope & pegs, was just to lazy to pull them out.

yeah i seen that one on tv today, looks great, very easy to set up and coveres a big area, i think they are about 800 or so bucks. been looking to see how long it is, it looks to be a big unit, dont know how you would go for length on a suzuki tho?
