First post here...

Been thinking about adding a turbo to my SJ80 for a while now. Looked at the ZOR My Turbo kit and thought i could do it another way... Im going to use a Holden Cruze K03 turbo which has an integrated exhaust manifold thats roughly the same width as the G13BA manifold. Ill make a CNC machined adapter to transition from the G13BA manifold shape to the Cruze manifold shape, which will be about 25mm thick. Aside from that the rest is pretty straight forward... Ive already got a Weber carb which needs minimal mods to handle boost, add a rising rate fuel pressure regulator and external fuel pump, maybe add an intercooler, one-way valve in the vacuum advance line, etc. Will aim for 5psi to keep the old engine internals relatively safe and see what happens... My only aim is to improve the drive experience to the beach and back, and hold gears better on hills. Im not aiming for high performance and cant be bothered changing to a 1.6 engine.

Starting with an ebay turbo for $300 and if the concept works ill upgrade to a better turbo for about $1000. Initially the total build will cost about $700, including the ebay turbo.

I did a rough test fit of the Cruze turbo today and it fits really well into the space available... I dont see there being any big barriers to getting this done at this stage....

Nice work!

Years ago Hos did a setup similar to this, see linked thread. He started with a Weber and later went to Falcon TBI with megasquirt running it.

I modelled up the exhaust manifold adapter today... used a stock G13BA gasket and a Cruze turbo exhaust manifold gasket to design a plate thats 25mm thick and transitions from one profile to the other. Ill get it machined up in the next couple of weeks.

Also bought the rest of the parts i need... rising rate regulator, fuel pump, boost gauge, AFR gauge, plus various fittings, pipes, hoses and clamps.

The most annoying bit is going to be welding up the oil return to the sump.

Total cost so far is $1100 on all new parts.... would be $300 less if i didnt get the AFR gauge but thatll be important later.. I reckon itll come to $1500 when its all said and done.

From memory, Hos ended up making around 125whp with the megasquirt, intercooler and more boost. It went very well indeed and he ran for a few years like that.

The sump is easy enough to pull with the engine in the car, I've done it a few times (on leaf sierras, dunno about coilys, I imagine you need to pull the panhard). If it's RTV'd on you'll want to buy or make a sump gasket cutter, really cheap on amazon/ebay. You might need to jack it up to get the sump out from between the pickup and diff housing.

Having done it old school and with a wideband, 100% you will not regret your investment in the wideband. Especially with the weber being a bit of a pain to jet.
