So I don't smoke and I want to use a double din GPS head unit so I was thinking why not replace the ashtray? Stick a UHF in there. Problem is I don't have any real fabrication experince, wondering people's thoughts? Too hard or worth a short? Thought some ideas and wisdom at me those in the know.

Easiest way to mount a UHF (presuming you haven't already bought a unit) is to get one with the controls on the handset.

Mount it under the dash or somewhere out the way, only thing required to be visible is the handset.

This is the kind of thing I use

should be easy-ish, measure the ashtray and see if a uhf will fit neatly in there, checkout how the ashtray mounts to the dash, bend a piece sheet metal/alloy to make a bracket to attach the uhf to the existing ashtray mounts, bingo! you're a fabricator. edit: many uhf come with a mounting bracket but you might have to drill some holes to match what's already there.

have a read of these threads (and, personally, I like the gps to up on top of the dash, in the right hand corner)

Well if you ar3 talking vitara then you can easily remove the tray clock and cig lighter. (Actually still need to remove my cig i plan to move it to be next to the auto selector)

Just pull off the radio surround and you will see what i mean. Then cut some black plastic sheet to fit the bottom section under the radio.
