Welcome!

Today I finally decided i was going to make a trailer for the jimny, needed to be small, have the same track width (1380mm) and same hubs as they will be running the same tyres as the Jimny. I had been thinking about it for a while and finally got the motivation to go to the local Boat and Trailer shop and have a chat to the workers.
Showed him what the plan was what it needed to match and they surprised me with how well it was mocked up in the shop.
So today i walked out with a 58 Inch round axle, two F100 Hubs (Same stud pattern as Jimnys) and bearings. got home and started assembling the hubs, really easy to do takes 10 minutes. Added the hubs to the axle and put on some spare Jimny rims (without tyres) and did some measurement, was basically spot on! centre of rim to centre of rim was 1375mm with the jimny being 1380mm I couldn't be happier.
Trailer Diementions will be 1050mm x 1250mm like i said itll be a small trailer and used for camping. My aim is to make it as light as possible but still very strong
Itll be a bit of a slow build over the next couple months but ill take plenty of photos and add them to the build thread

It's always great to see people take trailer building into their own hands. I'll be keeping an eye out to see what comes of it :)

Before you go to far I would strongly recomend fitting trailer brakes. Max towing weight with no brakes for a jimny is 350kg. Mine has 10" electric drum brakes and it stops brilliantly.

So finally got off my ass and decided to make the trailer.
Used 40x40x3mm box for the frame work and some 40x40 angle round the top to mount the sheets to.
Plan is to have a hard lid and have it water tight as best as i can make it, used 650 kg eye to eye springs and an axle to match the jimny wheel track.
Over all Dimensions are 1080 wide by 1200 long 500 high.

welded up the drawbar today and took it around the block a few times couldn't even feel it behind me.

Great start.
You'll be glad you went 500mm high (I kind of wish my was that little bit deeper).

Have a serious think about electric brakes, it's still easy to add them at this stage before you start wiring it up.

You'll want to add shocks. Trailers normally have slipper springs which negate the need, but with normal shackles and no shocks it'll be bouncy.

you using gasless wire ? those welds look really good if you are, especially on the galv. i don't have any gas for my mig & the welds are usually pretty bad.

GraphicX I am using gasless mig, i ground off the gal coating to the clean metal.

Yeah brakes are the go mate, in the NT drawbar controllers are legal as well so you only need a $10 circuit breaker and wire from battery to trailer plug.
Decent drawbar brake controllers are only $100 or so.

I would be adding brakes before you register. It is a pain in the ass to get trailers re rated here. Do it right the first time.

Nope

98% of the trailers, caravans and campers I see on a near daily basis don't have shocks.

Pretty sure that you would be better off listening to ball over anyone else because he does warranty repairs and general repaire including insurance work on all the high end brands as well as having a engineering business.

Gwagon is a jerno, anyone from the NT should know to discount anything a Jurno says. Next he will be having a go at the shackle angle on this trailer.

Might add trailers to the list.

I would be adding rebound springs on a leaf trailer before shocks. Most dont have the height so the shock is on that big of a angle its hardly working

Still going haven't had time to do anything with it as I working away and should hopefully get the panels cut and on in the next 2 weeks then time to sort out wheel guards and wiring
Got fancy and made a switch panel on then CNC for the trailer 3 switches and a volt meter still waiting for the Volt meter tho
