Started making a rear bar last weekend. Pretty happy with how its looking. I guess I should put some mudflaps on? I really dont like the look of them though. Also going to weld on some recovery points and a bit of black checkerplate on the top to cover up that gap and make a step.. ![]()

Considering that not having mudflaps would be the #1 reason cars get defected I'd be putting them on. Steve. |

I am not that comfortable with recovery points that are welded on. |

yeh ive bought some mudflaps.. dont need to draw attention to the other parts of my car they could defect if they wanted. I was thinking of making kind of t shaped recovery points, so i could have the t section behind the bar and then the longer bit sticking though with a hole for a shackle. That way im not just relying on one weld. It kinda scares me too. |

I thought i might update this, the bar is all finished now, mudflaps (not heaps happy with where they sit yet) checker plate and number plate lights. Admittedly it cost a bit more then $60 now but the checker plate was free ![]() ![]()

Hey, just got engaged so wont have time to make anything before the end of the yr. If one or two people are seriously interested i might consider it next yr... Dont really know how the winch idea would go though, i guess it would be strong enough, i attached it to the tow bar mounts but not sure if there would be enough room behind it for the winch.. might have to make the whole bar stick out more to fit it in |

Recovery points are to be bolted on only. Never use shackles in snatch recovery |

how do you attach a snatch strap to something like a towbar with the ball removed, skyhooks? hell, even the rated billet machined receiver hitches that slide into a hayman reese towbar have shackles to attach the strap to the vehicle. |

Hell they use shackles in industry. As long as its rated it isnt a problem |

joining a strap with one definitely is. i'd be worried if you've got substandard recovery points or the hillbilly factor takes over & the recovery goes redneck. |

No but I also haven't used one that wasn't rated for the job it was doing. Unless you've got a hayman reese towbar that you use the pin through the eye of the strap or you've got a hook with a safety catch you need to use a shackle. |

When the consequence is death, why wouldn't you spend the couple hundred to get recovery hooks fitted properly? Shackles are only rated to a straight line pull, and not for twisting either... How many recovery's end up involving both? |

Bow shackles are good for off-axis loads... but only in one direction. In the cases where shackles have gone flying, how often is the shackle itself the point of failure (assuming an adequately rated bow shackle is used.) |

Nice job on the bar I did notice the kinks from the press bender they really aren't much chop.next time try filling the tube with sand and tax some caps on it and it should bend better. And on the topping of welded recovery points 1 inch of good penetrated weld is capable of lifting a tonne so if it's welded fully it should withstand anything I have them on mine and have recovery many a snatch without fail or hint off. |

Yeh ive gone one step further and have a laser cut kit for a proper mandrel bender waiting to be assembled. I just got to but the bullet and buy a $500 die for it but that should get me flawless results mmm i do still need to do the recovery points.. and i will have to weld something cause there is no where to bolt anything on with this custom bar |
