Hey AZ,

I thought I would just throw up some pictures and details of this brazier I put together yesterday for anyone interested. It's basically the internal tank of a hot water system, which I got from a mate for free. Some cutting, a little welding and lots of wire wheeling and it was done, I'm happy with the end result considering all materials were free and it only took 3 hours to put together. These things get super hot and are perfect to sit around in winter with a few drinks  .

Start with this big rusty thing. Cut the weld around that center pipe.
Image

Flip it over and cut the weld that holds that end of the tank together.
Image

This thing comes out which later becomes your base.
Image

Cut brazier to desired height.
Image

Plate this hole and then weld the base to the brazier.
Image

Cut out mesh to the ID of the brazier. This sits on top of the lower tapered section of the brazier allowing a nice air pocket to help fuel the fire.
Image
Image

Drill some holes for airflow. Too many holes and the wood burns to fast.
Image

enjoy it :D

Great idea. I might pinch this and make one of my own for the farm.

The only "nice" improvement would be to be able to open/close a couple of holes with some sort of swinging flap to get the airflow just right.... but honestly, I doubt I could be arsed. :)

old carbie mounted on the base, with the centre pipe stand being used to feed air up to the fire.

big old school 4 barrel, or a couple of webers should look the goods. 8)

I did think about this but I couldn't be bothered spending too much time on it :P , I needed it that night.

You could use an excess piece of the cylinder, cut it and reweld so it slides over the exterior of the brazier. Then drill holes in it at the same spacing as the ones on the brazier so when it's rotated on the brazier it will reduce flow to each air hole.

Haha!

Actually, I do have a few 600 vac-sec holley's in the shed doing nothing. Now to crack another beer and work out how to plum some kind of fire-starter into the mix.

I do actually have pistons and headers a plenty. What a fantastic idea, albeit slightly (very) bogan.

a shot of methanol and glow plugs to get it fired up?
or

Always wanted to do one of these, with a turbo and an alternator

Have the flue gasses spin the turbo to drive more fresh air in to fuel the fire. Awesomeness.

tank is a combustion chamber only so it has to have a door that seals really well and a electric motor to spool the turbo to prime it.

combine it with a glowplug and injector for kerro and fill it with wood she would become self sustaining without kerro and turbo-alternating pretty quick.
would be fun to play with (increasing electrical load) to see how much power you could get out of it. turbo size and intake swirl on the exhaust side would prevent some particulate getting into the bearings via Centrifugal force.

solar panel's may be easier, but at night this could heat and light your house. plus you are releasing some CO2 to grow more trees to burn! pompoms

wonder if the alternator load got too low if you could melt the thing from producing too much boost. that would be awesome!

copper tube direct from the cold side of the turbo into the exhaust tip, and inject extra kerro.

you know, for afterburning.

so visiting the scrap pile at work tomorrow!!!

RE: turbo .

How do you stop it from seizing up when run at extreme temperatures with no oil lubrication ?
