Post subject:  tube flares for a sierra

I have had a couple of people ask for pics and ideas on how we built tube flares on a sierra, replacing the original tin flares.

firstly our sills were replaced with 100mm x 100mm box
front bar is a simple 100 x 50mm box shaped and welded.
tube is 30 mm NB tube i believe.
outriggers are 50mm by 3 mm flat bar

And I spent all that dicking around trying to find (unsucessfully I might add!) 100x75 because I thought 100x100 would look too fat

Who rolled the pipe for ya?

we did all the bending in a cheep hydrolic bender

100x 100 is perfect, I've just done mine though we laminated 100x50 together for a bit of added strength. I thought 100 across the base might push up too much.

Hey Tanshi - any pics from a bit further away? Just interested in the overall appearance.

Looks like nice work!

Awesome, I would be interested in seeing how they hold up against trees (we have a lot of them here). I have never seen this done before. Not only does it look sweet, it's a hell of a way to think out side of the box

Great looking bends/rolls for the bender too.

to make it strong enough to hit trees you'd probably have to run at least one pipe along the top of the arch and back to the chassis rail - all my hits on my flares, if the car's nose is pointing right, are at the 1 and 2 o'clock position on the flares, so that's where i'd re-inforce mine if i did it like that.

very good job though!

the car also has a virtual lift done. the strip that was put in to replace what was cut out was 2mm.

we figure if they arent strong enough we can put in more reinforcement.

honestly i think running anything back to the chassis is over kill.

we run similar to this on our LJs and ive had mine on its side on them more than once without damage. obviously damage can happen, but they arent that hard to make that we wouldnt happily make a replacement if we destroy one. all up i doubt if these cost more than 10 in materials per flare.

since you have mounted it to the chassis (via the front bar) and the sliders (body) wouldnt this create a little bit of difference when the body moves and flexs on the mounts?? or is it that tiny it wouldnt really matter ??

I cant see it making that much difference. its all sealed to the body with flexable sealer.
I cant imagine that part of the body flexing enough to do any harm

they look good mate
my only reservation is how much wider it all is overall, you will have trouble say climbing a bank as the bar and flare will hit before the tyre. or so it looks in the pics anyway

Post subject:  Re: tube flares for a sierra

there is about 30mm of tyre outside of the flare, my LJ has a bit more than this but in the end we wanted to cover the tyre.

I will try and get a good front on shot of the flare, it will show that the taper on the tube as it comes out from the front bar allows about 100mm of width of tyre about 90% of the tyres height (33s) to approach an object with nothing to obstruct it. so we could drive up to a tree stump probably 31 inches high and as long as we lined it up on that 100mm it would climb without hitting anything other than tyre.

basically this is a nice cheep and relativly easy replacement for stock steel flares or rubber flares. you will be able to slide on them in ruts or glance off trees, thus not destroying your stock flares or rippling off your rubber ones.

Far out - that looks fantastic. Never having to stuff with flares again would also be a god-send.

Great job Tanshi

Body rubbers flex maybe 2-3mm and given the length I doubt it would be an issue
