tab bought his sierra a while ago now and the first stage was to chuck some bolt in gear to get it ready for one of our tassie trips. this consisted of 5.12 diff centres, front and rear air lockers, 2 inch alloy body lift and 50mm old man emu springs. to say the vehicle was good with that setup is an understatement.
now we are up to stage two which will consist of heaps of fabbed stuff. this time around she will be gettin a 1.6 vit efi, 4 speed electronic auto, dual cases and power steer. heaps of work but the benefits are fantastic. here is a pic of a lwb we picked up cheap wth 1.6 and f&r lockers. this was the donor vehicle for the power steer and engine, and his sisters vit scores the lockers.

will be taking lots of pics of his truck this week so stay tuned.

How snug are the duals in a SWB?? Wouldn't the rear shaft be a bit short??

well the lwb will be rollin, minus 5.1's for my v6 vit, but will keep all panel and chassis as is, we're just taking diff gears and driveline. and the tailshaft is only about 50mm shorter with the duals.

today i started doin some machining for the dual cases. while tab is pullin everything down its my job to do the tricky shite. i have to adapt two yokes so i'm machining to and one with a spigot to keep it true. then i'll be doing the custom out put flange.

Image
Image
machining of the yokes begins. with two yokes together we only move the sierra t/case back approx 50mm.

Image
what the t/case will look like.

Image
i had these splined shafts made a few years ago. they suit a particular spline in the vit case and is what allows me to make the system nice and short. these are pressed and welded into a flange 'blank' and then machined true.

I'm liking that Joe.

What that t-case setup you could run with no Sierra case couldn't you? With an auto and 5.1 diffs that might be a decent setup with ~31" tyres.

we started to widen the tunnel on the weekend in preparation for fitting all the components. the easy part is getting the engine in and wired, the hard part is making the auto and dual case fit in the tunnel nicely. the gearbox cross member has been cut out and i will fab up a new one to suit the auto which will be removable.

Image
....no turning back now tab!.....

Image
the tunnel strech. it will be fully seam sealed and smoothed out with shellite, then painted to match. the g/box mount is also removed.

Image
donor 1.6 waiting to in.

Image
the old g/box and t/case mount from the lwb, will do something similar...just more compact.

i have't put this in the auszookers rig section as i want to show people how many thing have to be made and machined for a project of this kind and this is the easy part as next year both tabs and kenny's lj will be gettin coils all round.....bucket loads of machining in that thread. stay tuned more stuff during the week....

Hey Joe, can you explain what you use the shellite for?

BTW, this got double posted, I deleted the 2nd one.

ta damo....computer threw a spazz.....shellite is pretty much the same as grease and wax remover. once the sealer is on we drench a rag with the stuff and then wipe it smooth for a nice finish. once dry we paint. if you ever want a bead of silicone to look good wipe it with this stuff and you will see.

a pic of the splined shaft being parted......

Any reason why he kept the shorty when the LWB looks like it's set up to go?

Or is not like that? :?

ok.........holidays ......woo hoo....anyway now that i have some time up my sleave its time to pull the finger out and get this t/case machined up for tab.
Image
first up i have pulled the vit t/case apart and cut off the bits of housing i don't need using a bandsaw, after that is done she is clamped down to the mill for some more 'accurate' machining.

Image
this is the gear cluster. what i am aiming to do is remove all the front out-put components.

Image
Image
the front output gears are removed, you can see the splines just above the main bearing, these are splines i will be using for the new output flange.

Image
Image
the shaft is then cut and placed in the lathe to have a new hole drilled for an m10 flange bolt. this is a slow process as the shaft is hardened, but with patience and the right gear can be drilled into easily.

Image
Image
this is the new shifter seal housing. it presses into the case and has an o-ring at the bottom to seal, and a proper seal at the top fot the shift fork. when the shift lever bracket is installed on the 2 m8 threads i have retained in the case it will push down on the seal housing securing it tightley.

next up i will be machining the new output seal housing from 110mm aluminium, and have the case and main seal housing welded in place. once this is done i can start re-assembling the case ready for tabs vehicle.

How did it sit at higher speeds running the lower diff gears? Like sitting at 100 with the 1.3L? was it a struggle? what size tyres was he running?
