i have just put together my air tank for my jimny!! i still need to mount the tank (it fits in where the wheel spanner and jack lives.

i decided to use fire extinguisher bottles because
1 they fit in the right place with the jack
2 cheap
3 have a high enough pressure rating (the one i have do)

it is made up of a vair275c compressor, 2 1litre fires extinguishers, 90psi on and 150psi off pressure switch and 175psi safety valve. i havent put in a drain drain bung as i didnt want to alter the bottle in ANY WAY! as soon as you put holes in or weld them i would be dubious about structural integrity. The fire extinguishers that i have are pressure rated to 2.5MPa (362.6 psi).

i etched the inside of the bottles with hydrochloric acid and have lined them with resin, to prevent rusting.

the biggest problem i had was the reducers from the bottles down to 3/4inch BSP. the bottles use 24mmx1.5mmpitch so i had to get them machined up. but very happy with the results.

the tanks hold enough air to blow out your air filter anf makes pumping up tyres a lot quicker! but that being said i cant fill a tyre from sand to road pressure just from the tank. the compressor has to start up. it would be a lot better with a bigger tank, but i didnt want to take up valuable space.

I've seen that done before. But a single larger tank was used.

Your setup looks very bulky. Where in the car will you be mounting all of that?

EDIT: I re-read your post. Not familar with the jack storage area on a jimny, so I'll have to wait for pics. :wink:

IMO you should make a cradle to sit both bottles side by side. That will save some space for sure!

I have a tank a bit bigger than those ones that i'm planning to use for onboard air. I haven't figured out where to mount it though.

The only place I can put it is under the driver or passenger, outboard of the chassis rail. That would make it linds vunerable though I think, hence why it's still sitting in the shed.

what about having it under and towards the back of the glovebox?? can still run an air line out the window and its protected from the elements =)

I'd put anything i was attaching on the passengers side too - counter the suzuki lean.. haha

I have an air tank bolted underneath my vitara
The cross rails on the chassis are easy to bolt to
Using 2" muffler clamps / not sure on jimny
But you can fit quite a large tank in there with no hang
Past the rails - will post pix when I can

Dunno if it's me being a pussy or not but I just don't like the idea of compressed air tank inside the vehicle.

I mean it would probably be OK, but if I can fit it somewhere under the vehicle that's my preference. I don't like to take up precious interior space unless I have to either.

hahaha but its compressed air so it weighs more.... seriously though, the tank and fittings would be a few KG - better to have it on the other side of the car regardless, every bit counts =)

damo - if its only holding lower PSIs and is rated higher i wouldnt see it as an issue in the cab.. take a look at paintball players - running, diving, sliding and smashing 68cu air tanks filled to 4500psi all day - no ones ever died from a tank exploding cos its never happened. People have been injured by their regulator exploding though - but thats cos they used the wrong lube in the internals and it dieselled on a refill.

Those thanks are designed for all that running aruond though, the neck of an extinguisher is going to be somewhat weak with all the stuff hanging from it

Yeah that's true, I saw something like that on mythbusters :D

Plus i also saw a vid of a guys shooting at an lpg tank and when it was punctured it just shot out a mad flame.

Though they can still explode in some situations though I wouldn't worry to much about it as long as you don't put to much pressure in it and you support the neck like what Royce was talking about.

However it does have a safety valve rated at 175psi. So if the valve operates correctly it will not explode.

Yeah that's true, I was thinking worst case scenarios. Just so we are clear, I think it's a good idea.

no theyre not... theyre all just a standard air tank with a standard threaded end... paintball manufacturers took the tanks and modified their own regulators to run a paintball marker. All im saying is that the tanks are tougher than most give them credit for, and its usually the fittings that leak/cause issues, not the tank itself.
