well after seeing a very well done home made sand flag on the weekend, i decided to make one.. first i bought a 9.5 mm tent pole, the fiberglass type that connect to gether to slide through the tent.. then i bought a copule of air fittings... messed around for a bit and came up with this..
ill bolt the male fitting through the plate on my bull bar. quick release flag, that folds up smaller than any bought flag, for a fraction of the price.. |

nah i cant take credit for the idea.. just thought i'd share with others as its a fair bit cheaper than buying a pre made flag.. and a hell of a lot smaller when you pack it away.. |

very good idea with the air fittings, ill be using that. one question tho, how are the lengths of pipe being held together? as the tent poles i have seen will disconnect with a slight pull, so once you get up to speed or go over a bump wont they just disconnect from each other? Mitch |

I don't think it will be an issue with just the bouncing around. Just an idea though, when you are home and you are storing it you will be way better off straightening it out and storing it like that as the elastic is less stretched when it is straight so it might last longer. |

the person i coppied the idea from told me he has had them on the rig for 4 days strait and they were fine. the elastic that holds them together is quite strong depending on how tight you make it, and any movement (wind pulling them backwards) seems to make them hard to pull apart.. i followed him up the top of saunders gorge and it was very windy and it held up great.. he has the tent/flag pole going through a ring about 20cm from the base to give it more stability and strength. as for the air fitting, the flags you buy from ARB have the same idea. although the flag is close to $100 + $25 for the quick release air fitting attachment + $25 for a spring on the base. this so far cost me $5 for the flag, $19 for the tent pole, and $10 for the air fittings.. and from what i have seen, will do just as well, if not better as it folds up much smaller.. |

you only need a sand flag on vehicles that move in the dunes... since you bought a land rover, it will either be broken or bogged... hence, no need for a sand flag

Thanks morpheus for the idea.. i just made mine... not as flash as yours.. but managed it for $2.30 and 4 zip ties.. same idea for pole, shorted 2 lengths out of it.. so its around 7ft.. used a bunnings long load flag cut into a triangle and zip tied it to the front of my chassis looks well average |

so long as it does the job, and prevents someone landing on top of you on the sand dunes, it dont matter what it looks like.. i just mounted mine to the car and took it for a spin.. i got up to 80K's and it looked fine.... i put 2 sockets on the bull bar so i'd have a choice of where i wanted it.. in the middle of the bull bar, or in front of the left hand headlight..

Nice idea, how does the female air fitting attach to the tent pole ? |

its a barbed end, and i just pushed it in, when i say pushed, i actually mean hit it on the floor til it went in lol.. its unlikely i'll ever be able to pull it out, let alone fall out.... the tent poles i used were 9'5mm, and the barbed female end is made for a 10mm air pipe, so its almost a perfect fit.. |

i made a sand flag using a old beach fishing rod, stripped of the eyelets for the fishing wire to go through, spayed the pole black, then mounted a peice of pvc conduit to the bull bar and hey presto a flag using a fishing rod from the shed. |
