I just made a sort of cage to cart around fallen trees.
Got to thinking that perhaps I could turn it into a motorhome. With some timber pieces for stability across the top and a few more ties onto the tray and a canvas cover, I could just about sleep in it with the end panel down and my feet sticking out. Sure would beat setting up a tent and sleeping on the ground. Dont really want to have to drill holes in the tray if I can help it.
Anyone one else turned a Stockman into a motorhome?

I think Titty has it right. What kind of mileage would you get from a 3 bed, 2 bath Winnebago?? When it comes to long distance touring nothing beats the Sierra: apart from the comfort factor and the feet sticking out factor and the lack of storage space factor, apart from that, its the perfect motorhome...

the funny thing is that's every feature a motor home aims at hahaha. but great idea do it, im going to set my lwb up for sleeping in when i get it back as i can lay down stretched out in the cab if i fold my front seats right forward and push them forward.

yup Im gonna do it. Im already planning my first trip.
Just found I have enough unused canvas to do the job.
Need to design it so that the canvas can extend outwards when the tray is open at the back. Also the gate will need to be supported so that the mattress sits flat. Windows and an awning will also be featured.
I once turned a Suzuki Carry into a motorhome- fully carpeted and with tinted windows, so I reckon I could do this.

No I built it with a mate in 2 days before a snow trip.
Full RUF with inboarded springs, hoops, ranchos
G16B
115L custom stainless tank
Roof top tent
Heaps of lecky shit
Tube bar etc
We got to Coffs before the gearbox showered the highway with shrapnel Didn't matter anyway, as we found out the there was no way past the floods that were happening 200kms south of us at the time

my family did a trip round tasmania in a 6 person winnebago. ran diesel, and wasnt overly powerful, but the fuel economy averaged 10-12L/100km for the 2 weeks... thats mostly highway driving, but it also includes all the hills (anyone that lives there or has been to tasmania knows what im talking about) so pretty good.
i would think a sierra with a big rooftop tent or one of those camper thingys on that red 'zuk on the pics above would be quite thirsty on the highways. lets face it; sierras arent exactly very well designed aerodynamically in stock form, add something like that and there goes the economy oh highways, possibly the ability to sit on 100km/h without at least a 1.6 conversion... would be fun to have though

Whip up a framework and hack up a canvas tarp to make the cover.
Zips, fasteners and awl can be found cheaply on ebay.
Mine cost about $60 to get to the stage below.
Now the prettiest canopy around - but it serves me well for summer beach trips and hunting trips out west.
Plus the satisfaction of doing all the work yourself.

How did you attach the frame - do you have any pics with the canvas off?

i have done something similar with my zute for when i go camping with the roof top tent. not a very good photo but it is set up in the back of this photo. I made a frame out of 2 inch tube using fencing clamps to join it all together, strap the frame to the tray with a rachet strap in each corner and it stays put, even when sleeping at night. built it up off the tray just enough to get all my camping boxes and gear under it without making the ute top heavy. All you need to do when you get home it lift the whole frame off the tray and it is back to normal.
I can get more photos if anyone wants them.
