ok after spending quite alot of time with very little results, i have been thinking i might give fiberglassing a go and try to make a one off Back/roof part

thanks to zot_boy for this pic... for the peopl who dont know what i am talking about
Image

basicly a one part roof, back etc.

just a few questions, does any one on here have any experiance in making things like this from scrach?

i have done a fair bit of reserch about it on the net..

basicly i am going to try borow mikes spair B piller etc and set it all out... i was thinking along the lines of useing the factory suzuki roof parts, then useing some plastic carbord (some stuff i picked up off a building sight that they use for insulation? thought it would be handy) expander foam, filler etc....

does any one have any ideas to posibly make this nice and simple...

also how do the standard fiberglass tops hold down? i am asuming its a type of clip? can any one get a pic?

also for the rear window i am thnking of useing a hard top rear window? i do have one somewhere...

Use perspex for the rear window. Glass would be too heavy.

yeah i have been thinking about both..

there was a few things bought up about perspex shattering?

Use Lexcen or polycarbonate. Both are dear but won't break like perspex.

BTW what are you trying to achieve? Better sealed cab? Quieter? Waterproofing?

If its just security, just make a better torneau cover.

basicly all of the above, it gets DAM cold down here in the middle off winter! and i want a ONE pice top that i can just take the whole thing of.

also a bit sick of soft top flapping!

i have been thinking about it for a while now.. i will also be putting around 6inches longer in the cab, the issue i am having atm is working out how to do the corners... i have been thinking about useing plastic carbord for the mould, lining the inside with expander foam, cutting the corner round, then doing the suface with body filler and sanding for a smooth finish!

The only other thing that is left to work out is attaching the actual top to the car.

i am thining along the line of a pice of thin plate around 50mmx20mmx1.6 with 6mm threads welded in to it, and putting that in the center of the actual fiberglass (after around 3 sheets of cloth?) with the threads poking inside??? then some type of latch, or maby some flat plate with nutserts.. this way it wouldnt appear on the outside of the fiberglass?

this is all just ideas atm i like to have everything completley sorted before i start on anything!

The fibreglass canopy over the drivers seat I have, uses 4 brackets, two into the windscreen surround, and two into the rails from A pillar to B pillar.

If you have a look on these you will m10 bolts holes there.

For the rear, you could crew/bolt in using m10 into the back of the B pillar.

My rear canopy bolts down on top of the sides of the styleside if that makes sense.

Much better option (the maruti roof), will save you a shit load of farting about. What did it set you back? I was lucky, mine was free!

No offense to you or the owner of the "roll bar" but that thing is purely for decoration. Welded in bends in the main hoop? and bent rear stays intersecting the main hoop halfway up the verticle plain, and no triangulation......

Only thing missing is chrome and some wanker lights.... :P

Yeah I was worried about lateral movement so I did this.
I have had the car on its side twice and over once. No damage that was with the full exo but
