Hey Joe,
I like that to 'cause it swings the same way as the tailgate and less to open for access the better I agree. Do you think that if I hang the spare on the left and jerry on the right the extra weight of the tyre at the opposite end will cause sag over time? note: I'm using a properly made stubb etc.. and also a Kaymar latch which i'll mount close to the tyre where ever that maybe?
Thoughts?

the bearing might have a hard time......over time.
i recently designed a system for overseas use using a hub with tapered plastic bushes......seen too many bearings crap themselves too quickly in carriers for some reason. it will need to rest on something decent when in the closed position as this will limit the bearing shells 'pitting out' with vibration, similar to what those pain in the butt king-pin bearings do...

Thanks Joe,
The bearings are same as trailer wheel bearings so replacing them is no problem and Latch set up will be same as Kaymar and just as strong so should be ok for movement I think?

It took about 2 weekends cause I had to wait for lights etc.. but if you've got everything you could do it in one easy!!! I'm still doing the carrier but it's just too dark when I get home during the week so will finish it this weekend hopefully?

Yeah I know , but I'd rather make my own custom stuff than buy off the shelf and pay out the arse for it! Plus you get exactly what you want and a sense of achievement when you stand back and look at it and say I made that!

nice job! did you consider putting in another piece of box between your arm and upright just to add some triangulation and strength?

Thanks Zook Fan, yeah I did but the steel thickness I've used will not require it, it's plenty strong enough as it is.

As said further up the page it's a Kaymar latch but you can get similar on ebay at the moment.
