On Monday I picked up a 2.5L V6 motor (serial # H25A-140480, apparently circa 2002 as that's what someon's scrawled on the came-with-it computer). It also came with manual gearbox attached. I thought great, free box upgrade with the motor! But wait a minute...

I bought a 1995 SV620 with a blown H20A motor mid 2012 (I thought motor was OK, it ran, but was noisy, and I thought it just needed a timing chain kit!). I figured it was going to be an easy swap but now I have the old box out, it's obvious the box bolted to the H25A is different enough to be a game changer....

The newer box's gear level is about 55mm further back and the front driveshaft must be around 100m further back. It's not going to fit without a longer front driveshaft and a shorter tailshaft. Additionally, the clutch slave cylinder is on the RHS on the newer box.

I'm about to separate the newer box from the H25A and I understand I can use the original H20A box as long as I use the older spigot bearing with the new clutch (to fit the original gearbox's input shaft). So, if I haven't understood the problem(s), can anyone tell me of any other potential gotchas of using the H20A's gearbox with the H25A?

H20 box is not as strong. So this may eventually cause you some issues.

Otherwise, I have no usefull input

Well, gearbox and motor are apart and I've bolted on the H20A's clutch. The spigot bearing on both flywheels is a standard sealed 6002 (15mm ID, 32mmm OD, 9mm depth), so I didn't have to change it.

Yes, I appreciate that the H25A is a much stronger box - the clutch is also heavier and the gearbox input shaft is a much larger diameter. If I thought I needed the extra strength I'd investigate getting the appropriate output shafts (the gear levers being back over 2" probably isn't an issue. I'll probably keep the H25A gearbox just in case I do come across some output shafts from a newer Vitara.

gee Peter you don't mess around, even if you did end up with a surplus gearbox its still a good deal.
