As there are a few of us building up tougher vitaras, and mines currently under construction, ive been thinking about a few mods to the front end to increase its strength. Most of us now have swapped over to a steel gv housing and carrier, and fitted an ARB air locker. next on the list to give up would be the cv's.
One simple mod cj from victorian suzuki club pioneered was to add a bearing to the drivers size of the diff housing to provide the inner cv shaft more support. There was a thread on this floating around on a forum somewhere a while ago, but i cant remember where it was, i do however have the CAD drawing of the bearing holder he had machined up. Since then suzuki must have realised this is weak point in the front end and have released their own nylon bush, as shown in another thread here.

apparently its about 100 odd bucks for this nylon bush from suzuki.
back to my question, would this nylon bush to the job, or would I be better off machining up the bearing holder and putting a propper bearing in there?
attached is the CAD drawing of the bearing holder cj had made.

bruce should get a hold of those nylon puppies, are they meant to stop the stress that causes the housing to break ?

It can allow the cv to move around slightly as it is only retained by the splines that go into the side gears of the diff, which is only a real problem under extreme load. Aparently it has also lead to excessive seal wear on gv's that don't have free wheeling hubs fitted.

True, but if the play is there, let`s get rid of it, I think a bearing is overkill.
This bush will do the job nicely..

Well, if you guys can get the nylon bush to work with standard Vitara driveshafts...... tell me how! The pic of the nylon bush is from my car, and since putting in the bush I cant get the shaft to stay locked in to the diff centre. Everytime I put it in 4x4 the shaft slowly makes its way out of the housing by an inch or more. Its as if the circlip is not locking in due the fact the diff seal is now more proud with the nylon bush in behind it. This is the reason I asked steknig for a pic of a GV shaft in another thread to see if there was any difference. If anyone has a solution please share. I dont want to waste this $130 rip off price suzuki part.

Keep in mind this part was originally intended for GV housings due to the shaft wear caused by non free wheeling hubs on Grand Vits. Not such an issue with earlier vitaras with Auto or free wheeling hubs. I only put it in for precaution. All its caused so far are headaches.

Hey, you can count me in, and if you want to use my car ans an experiment, then lets do it as I'm about to pull it apart and put a locker in it...Happy to pay for anything needed, and I can pick the part up tomorrow and drop it off towmorrow if that helps any, I would just have to do it before 11am.
